Can someone tell me what the major storylines developed under Brash and Cwikly?

April 2012 Episode Rankings & Stats
Apr 28 2012, 06:27 PM
April Episode Rankings. Here's how many episodes each actor has appeared in this month (4/1/12-4/30/12), out of a total of 21 episodes. Ties are noted with an asterisk.
Rank. Actor (Character) # of Episodes

34. Matthew Ashford (Jack Deveraux) 1
*. Julian Barnes (Harold) 1
*. Lauren Boles (Ciara Brady) 1
*. Fabrizio Brienza (Santo DiMera) 1
*. Mary Beth Evans (Kayla Johnson) 1
*. Peggy McCay (Caroline Brady) 1
*. Melissa Reeves (Jennifer Horton) 1
*. Isabelle & Sahara Roberts (Sydney DiMera) 1
*. Freddie Smith (Sonny Kiriakis) 1

Why am I watching this show again? :frustration:
While Freddie Smith's one flipping appearance on this show is a tragedy considering he is the love interest of a main character on this show, I would have to say that the biggest tragedy is Matt Ashford. MATT ASHFORD. A member of the Super Six made one appearance in the month of April.

I can't.

I stand behind my thoughts that Drake is being unfairly attacked...
It's not an attack. It's a critique of his acting.
...just because a screen cap was paused at the wrong time.
LoL. I've watched the promo five or six times now and even in motion I still think Drake looks stupid.
Is Drake Sir Laurence Olivier? No.

Does he emote enough to make the existence of John Black (super spy/fashion tycoon/ex-priest/ex-Pawn/ex-art thief/ex-mercenary/ex-Roman Brady/all around nice guy superhero) seem somewhat real? Yeah.

Any dude that is committed enough to the (caricature) character described above has some talent.

And to be quite honest, I think Drake has been pretty convincing since his return. He had some really good scenes during the John/Bernie Madoff storyline.

That said, Drake Hogestyn is, and never will be, on par with soap's leading actors (Jerry ver Dorn, Eric Braeden, Michael Park, etc.) And you know what? That's fine by me.

At least Drake will always be better than Ronn Moss.

One of my favorite Marlena slaps.

I can't wait for the next part to be uploaded so I can see Carrie bust into the wedding and slap the shit out of Sami. I've seen the slap many times but I haven't seen all the drama that led up to it since it originally aired in 1997. Hopefully none of that is edited out. I want to see Sami crying outside St. Luke's and pounding on the windows as Austin and Carrie exchange vows as well, LoL.
Loving Sami's chola-style makeup on her wedding day.

For all the shit that Ali Sweeney takes on this board, she was so good at being bad!

Interesting/Spoilerish Tweets, Week of 4/23
I'd love to see KS come back as Belle - only because I want to see the Black family as a whole unit before the cancellation of this show. I can't imagine tiny, youthful storms having an 8 year old child, however. (Assuming that hold Claire in place from when she left the canvas, and just let her be her actual chronological age...) Beemer could come back as Shawn-D.

What bugs me about this whole scenario still is that MA and CC are getting shipped off to potentially bring back Chloe, and potentially some incarnation of Belle. What's next? FF back as Mimi?

Classic Days of Our Lives Discussion
There's so much John and Marlena fighting on this thread, I think it's time for loooooove.

My favorite John and Marlena reunion ever after Kristen's downfall. One of the things that truly bugged me about this reunion is that JER never wrote a scene where John and Marlena sit tiny Belle and Brady down, explain that they are together now and that their new "roommate" Susan's baby Elvis is hers, and not their baby brother.

I've watched these scenes so many times, I can recite the dialogue (kinda sad to admit...)

Quoting limited to 4 levels deep
Drake had a really rough time with the Mercenary John storyline. It was simply because he would never disrespect a woman or be rough with a woman like John was scripted to be.

He got a script that said John is supposed to get so violent that he hits Marlena and for the first time ever, he asked for a script change. He got it rewritten to just a shove.

This is one of my favorite quotes from Drake.

SOAP OPERA DIGEST: Is John too easy on Brady?

Drake Hogestyn: Well, I am a stepparent (in real life), so I can say if either (of my stepchildren,) Ben or Rachael were ever to talk to me the way Brady talks to Marlena, (wife) Victoria would probably put the hammer down on them, which John really hasn't done. As far as the things he's said to Marlena, Brady would have seen the back of Drake's hand if he were my son.

I've never seen that, and it made me happy. I'm not sure why. It's not like it changed anything, lol.
LOL, it has Kyle quotes too...

Pop Chart:

Life as a daytime dad can be endlessly complicated, what with all of the faked paternity tests and various and sundry illegitimate children floating around. But that doesn't mean some pops aren't tops (especially the ones who know exactly how many kids they actually have). Find out how these fathers figure into their kids' lives via interviews with the actors who bring them to life, as well as through comments from their on-screen offspring. Go, Daddy-O

DAYS OF OUR LIVES - The Name Of The Father:

John Black

Pop's Progeny:

Brady and Belle Black, and J.T. Brady, AKA Isaac Carver

Family History:

Brady came into the world in 1992 during the wedding ceremony of his parents, John and Isabella. The very-pregnant bride went into labor before the "I do's," but sealed the deal with John after Brady's birth in a room in the church. Sadly, Isabella died soon after, so Brady was raised by John's wife, Marlena. Now nineteen, Brady can't stand his stepmommy, but he is fond of his half-sister, Belle, who was born in 1993. Thanks to a blood-test switcheroo by Belle's half-sister, Sami, Roman was believed to have fathered Belle. The truth that John was her father came out at her christening, courtesy of (who else?) Stefano. John also sired Hope's son, aptly named John Thomas, while under Stefano's control, but the baby's true parentage is one of Salem's best-kept secrets. (So is the fact that J.T. and Isaac were switched at birth, but that's another story.)

Rating The 'Rent:

John Black got a rating of three daddy heads out of four

Parent/Child Conference:

Drake Hogestyn (John) and Kyle Brandon Lowder (Brady)

SOAP OPERA DIGEST: Does your father/son relationship carry off-screen?

Drake Hogestyn: I think indirectly. I have a nineteen-year-old son and what I do as a father is try to set examples and show the right way to do things to go through life as easily as possible. When Kyle came to work here, he was put into a very professional atmosphere with myself and with Deidre (Hall, Marlena). He saw that we came here prepared, with our sleeves rolled up, and setting that example has been very positive.

Kyle Brandon Lowder: Most definitely. When I first got here, there were scenes with Drake to establish the relationship between John and Brady. Because of the amount of time Drake and I spent working together and the fact that I was brand-new on the soap and to soaps in general, I have been going to him for advice. I look up to him as a father off- as well as on-screen.

SOAP OPERA DIGEST: Is Brady a good son?

Kyle Brandon Lowder: Some people could say he isn't because he's mean and out of line. In my opinion, he's not perfect, but he's a little misunderstood. He loves his father to death, and the root of Brady's evil is that he's trying to be a good son. He's trying to get Marlena out of the picture to create a better situation for him, Belle and John.

I've caught a lot of the Brady v. Marlena storyline on YouTube, and I remember thinking the producers were thinking, "Oh, since Sami was wrapped up in another storyline, we obviously need someone to call Marlena a whore every second. Who can we get to fulfill that need? Enter disgruntled OOC Brady!"

NONE OF IT MADE ANY FUCKING SENSE. Did it make for good drama? Sometimes. But it was SO contrived!

Weekly Character Discussion: Rafe
Apr 24 2012, 10:24 PM
I'm fairly indifferent towards Rafe, don't hate him but don't really like him either. I was interested in Cafe, but MarDar totally botched it up.
I am not a huge fan of the character of Rafe, except when he is with his lady o' the moment (Carrie or Nicole.) I think GG has great chemistry with both CC and AZ. I am sad MarDar dropped the Cafe pairing, but I'm super excited about Racole.

And GG has this charm about him - I can't explain it. I think Rafe is this Dudley-Do-Right, boring ass character, but GG plays him with such charm... I can't help but like him. :)

If MR stays on the show, I wouldn't be surprised to see them throw Jennifer back with Daniel. Unless they cast someone in that age range especially for her, who else is there? Abe? Fauxman?
What about a May-December romance between her and Brady? Martsolf has chemistry with everybody.

also when susan walked down the aisle with her ridicolous weddin gown...omg..also when they shared a strawberry her and john *forgive me jarlena* but that was hot....bc both ED and DH moaned big time....hehe

Kristen and Marlena in that Secret Room was the stuff of legends! I loved watching them witness Susan and John making love, and then them watching the Elvis-themed wedding.

I love the character of John Black, but man, he was totally stupid during that storyline...

There is a fine line between playing dumb with dignity and out-and-out dumb (like Austin Peck throughout the Sami/Austin/Carrie/Lucas/Mike quadrangle of the 90s).

Drake walked the right side of that fine line.

There were so many good things about Kristen's exposure from June 1997:

1) John, Abe, Viv and Ivan's outfits.
2) The teeth flying.
3) Dee's luminescence through the whole confrontation.
4) Eileen Davidson's amazing show of desperation
5) Drake and his performance. Esp. his line about, "MY BABY, MY CHILD!" He says those words with such pain. I can't.

I love everything about summer 1997... except for Josh Taylor coming on the show. :shame:
I agree, I think Drake was crying throughout half of that show - he is an amazing dramatic actor. His tears rolling down his face and hitting the floor killed me.

I also thought he did a superb job of showing John's embarrassment because it wasn't just Marlena and Kristen there, it was all of John's family and friends. I always felt that they all should've excused themselves and went home...poor John.

It broke my heart when it came out Elvis wasn't John's son.
Now, I give Drake Hogestyn a lot of crap because, God even knows, if he wasn't as good looking as he is, he never would have lasted on Days more than that original West Virginia storyline...

That said, he grew into a commendable dramatic actor. My favorite "Dramatic Drake" scene is the one where he is talking to Belle when she's in the hospital after she was hit by train. (I don't know the details, I've only caught up on 2000-present since the reboot via YouTube).

I watched this and just sobbed. He is so good. And the way his voice cracks, and he still throws in those "Drake" touches (like "Isabella Beatrici Toscano"), he's just so amazing. I am so glad he is back.

(Sorry, I don't know how to embed videos on this board...)

Yep Poker Face, but what I loved about Drake's portrayal is that he never allowed his hand to touch Eileen's stomach. It is as if he and Eileen made a deal that if his hand came close to touching Kristen's pregnancy pad, she was to grab his hand in an effort to not make the character look so silly. Drake pulled it off beautifully. Even the scene where John and Kristen are taking a bubble bath together, his hand never touched her stomach, Kristen would grab his hand and kiss it or something like that.

Hehe, you want more quotes? This is from the SSK clips posted in this thread where John is carrying Marlena's "dead" body...

Kat: So, how do you keep playing this character and keep her fresh after so long? Does it ever get stale for you?

Deidre Hall: I rely on the writers and finding whatever fun is in it. No, it's never stale for me. The things that scare me are medical dialog or having to testify as an expert witness, but the every day stuff, playing with my kids, playing with Drake. He's my heart.

Kat: The chemistry between you two is ridiculous.

Deidre Hall: The chemistry is fabulous but we also have a mutual understanding of what the audience wants to see. He will just kiss me real slow and I'm thinking, you got 'em baby.

Kat: Tough job, that. Kissing Drake.

Deidre Hall: I get to live America's fantasy. I get to make love to a man whom every woman in the world wants to take home. It's a fantasy relationship that I know America just covets.

Kat: And the scenes he did with your (Marlena's) death were just incredible. It was some of the best work he's done in ages.

Deidre Hall: Yeah, I think so, too. When he carried me through the streets I thought, 'Gee I'm not exactly Kristian Alfonso. I'm a heavy little girl.' He's strong but I thought this is going to be a fast walk through the streets of Salem.

Kat: Thank God it's not a real town with real long streets.

Deidre Hall: Exactly. But he picked me up and I was dead weight in his arms, because I was supposed to be dead. And he carried me so slowly through the streets and I had my eyes closed and was just loving him. When you have children and you're first carrying them and you forget when there's a door-jamb there or something. I thought, during this walk through Salem I'm going to get my head banged because Drake hasn't held a baby for years. But it was fine.

Kat, SOAPNET, 6/1/04

The chemistry between the DH's is second to none. J&M, bar none, the best fictional couple ever, literature, theater, film, television.

They are just so complimentary of each other, but I suspect a lot of the camaraderie between the two is a mutual respect, appreciation and distance. They seem fond of each other, but certainly not friendly. In no interview have I ever read the DH's gush over each other like DHer has gushed over Wayne Northrop, nor DHim gush over Eileen Davidson.

And usually, if a supercouple isn't completely enthralled with each other (see: Nichols, Stephen and Evans, Mary Beth), it doesn't work - but on Days, it thrives! I can't name any supercouple other than Patch and Kayla whose portrayers were completely taken with each other. (The Bopes w/PR/KA, J&J w/MR/MA, even Shane/Kim -- PP and CS always seemed distant from each other.)
