Soaps are ALWAYS going to have a future. The devil is in how they're presented. I think web-soaps like THE BAY, STEAMBOAT and others might be one method. DRTV might be another... people may read soaps online. Prime time has copied the soap format for many years.

Somerset Opening 1976
It's one of the most underrated openings in all of daytime. Captures the spirit of the town and I love Charles Paul's "cool jazz" theme.

TV Guide: Melissa Reeves returns to Days!
I like this. It's going to have to be with Matt Ashford to make it work 100 percent, however, and even then with the current writing team I'm not impressed.

Still... Maybe John Martin? Possibly Jamie Lyn Bauer?? Are TPTB finally listening???

Holy shit. I never thought I'd see the day. Something's got to give. New writer, new producer, the return of Corday as the full EP (at this stage, I'll take anything)... of course, I don't know how far in the basement Days is buried, but it might be time to start examining this show from top to bottom.
Tomlim/Higley need to go.
Higley, sure, Tomlin, no.

I would be too worried about the budget efficiency, which is probably what will end up buying this show at least another year.

I do not think they should panic because it is summer. They did go up in demos and their HH aren't horrible either. Now, I'm not saying they shouldn't be concerned and that quality has nothing to do with it. It most certainly does. The show is better than it was in spring but that isn't saying much. That said, they can't really sit back and wait around too long into the Fall anymore to see if the numbers rebound. They need to look at what they have now and the research they have and make any adjustments they may feel is needed. The good news is it looks like there will be changes. We are already seeing some of them.

I will say that I am starting to think that the next renewal will come with a HW change, much like the 2003 and 2006 renewals did.
I'm going to play the other side here and say it's time for Tomlin to go too. I wouldn't be surprised if you see it happen. First Lindsay Hartley, now Gaby Rodriguez... I assume Galen is safe, but if he gets written out then I'd say all bets are off.

Should Days get renewed, I think there's going to be a push to take things back to the way they were. I think that means a Bope reunion (but I hope they really address everything that happened with the couple and Doug and Julie NEED to be there for their daughter), more familiar faces returning, and yes, a headwriter who knows the soap's history, whether it's Sheri or someone else.

There are some things that are working (the Victor/Maggie/Caroline scenes are a hoot to watch), but overall I sense this show's in trouble creatively, and that isn't a good thing.

Days: Judi Evans as Bonnie Lockhart
I love Judi Evans. I loved her as Beth. I loved her as Paulina. I loved her as Adrienne. I COULD NOT STAND BONNIE. She made me throw up. That's how bad the character was.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
Yeah, you don't have to be straight to go to a strip club. I have a lot of gay friends, and they all have been to a strip club one point in their life or the other. I'm not suggesting that Bryan's gay, but I don't think he is.
I don't think he is, either, simply because I've never gotten that "vibe" from him, but to cite him going to a strip club as evidence seemed a bit void of logic. Using that same equation, one could also say that you're gay just because you've seen a drag show. :drunk:
It's the old "you like musicals so you must be gay" shit. For the record, I enjoy going to stuff like Jersey Boys and Wicked and I'm not gay. I have the utmost respect for all fans here, though, whatever their orientation.

The shit I read here doesn't surprise me. It's more entertaining than the actual show some days. :)

Matt Ashford and Melissa Reeves to return?
I don't know. I'll probably be in the minority here, but if you're going to bring Jack and Jennifer back just to break them up then don't bother. You can do some good stuff with the characters without resorting to the old separation/reunion gambit often used during the supercouple era. (My God, here I am, one of the biggest defenders of the supercouple era and I just went against my own thinking... lol)

This show needs a foundation of sorts. It's got one with Maggie. I'm not saying bring Jack and Jennifer on just to be the Tom and Alice of this generation, but you'd have thought the way Jen idolized her "Gran" then she'd work on keeping her marriage strong.

And Bryan? Hell yes, I'd bring him back on, and I'd throw him right back into Sami's orbit. I also would find a way to get him involved with other stuff so he wouldn't be twisting on the back burner all the time.

GH: TV Guide interview with Bob Guza about Vanessa Marcil
Well, Robin Christopher's stay was supposed to be short-term and she's leaving at the end of the month. I don't think Kelly Monaco's going to go anywhere. If anything, Brenda's return could put some zip into the Sam/Jason story.

Jen and Brady?!! I know SORASing screws things up, but Brady was born only a few months before Abby. Brady's mother was a close friend of both Jennifer and Jack. I'm sorry, but that's just wrong to me. Daniel, maybe but not Brady or even Rafe.

And, I'm with Mason. Jennifer hooking up with Daniel or Rafe is pretty much the best reason I can think of NOT to bring them back.
I agree with all of this.
Same here. It's a package deal or no dice. As much as I love seeing Missy Reeves on my TV screen, if it's with Matt Ashford then don't create artificial reasons for Jen to screw around with other guys.

TV Guide: ATWT Says Goodbye to Helen Wagner
I'm all right with how the story is told but I have one big problem... I know Conard Fowkes is dead, but what about Don Hughes, Bob's brother? He should return for this. And no Hughes memorial would be complete without Rosemary Prinz's Penny.

No Don? Meh. Days forgot Tommy Horton. No Penny? Then ya screwed up.

They fired Matt lots of times. And Thaao.

It happens. I'm not glad anyone got fired. It's not a good thing. I wonder if there are more firings coming as Days seeks to get renewed beyond 2011. I do wonder if they're reworking things again in an effort to shake things up and "fix" the consistently terrible ratings.

I think more than firing people, they need to get another writer in there to help focus the stories better and maybe add some romance. Sorry, but Days used to handle romance beautifully and I can't think of one romance it's handling too well. I think this is a major shortcoming. I'd say Sheri Anderson because she knows about romance and how to plot and pace a story. She also knows about payoffs. Given the fact that Corday hired her to write those books, maybe she has a shot. She doesn't have to be the sole headwriter but she could work as a partner to someone else.
I'll come right out and say it. I want Sheri Anderson to return. I don't demand it but I'd sure love it.

Sheri doesn't necessarily have to take the show back to the past, but she can take it forward with the next generation of Bradys and Hortons while still respecting the soap's history.
You mean you want the focus to shift to some teen newbie princess who will be eventually revealed as an another lost child of either Dimeraīs or Kiriakises?

Because thatīs what she said her plans for the novell are.
No no, Jane. NOT her books. Those are just for fun. What I'm saying is she could write for Andrew and Jeannie (Kim and Shane's kids). A recast Jeremy without all that pilot bullshit we had to suffer through. Other Hortons and Bradys. And yes, the vets.

What I'm thinking about was the final two years of Ryan's Hope. Claire Labine was called back to save the show from cancellation... and I'm not saying Days is in any danger, believe me... and when she came on it was almost like a light switch was thrown on. Labine wrote for the younger set a lot of the time, but it was almost like RH regained its history. Claire knew the show up and down and she was able to put some believable stuff on the air.

well if James Scott goes so will a lot of fans.
Perfectly acceptable loss.
I agree. Look, James Scott is a great actor and it's not all his fault that writers have saddled him with some bad character choices, but I get the feeling the character has run its course in some ways.

I don't want to turn the focus of this around to what Days was like during Alice's funeral, but I found myself saying repeatedly "now THIS is the Days I grew up watching!" I suspect a lot of people thought the same thing and maybe the show wants to turn the focus around to more Hortons, more family drama, returning characters, etc.

'The Good Wife' retains Emmy winner Tammy Blanchard!
Me too! She, Rachel Miner and Aubrey Dollar are perhaps my three favorite GL actresses to move on to prime time. Tammy's been off screen for too long so this is a huge get for CBS. Nice!!

Speaking as a canadian, that portrayal of our nations capitol was beyond a joke.
Having been north of the border many times, I can tell you Canada takes great pride in keeping a clean nation. That's just writers who don't want to do the research.

Melina Kanakaredes leaving CSI NY!

I've heard CBS wants to become more male oriented, which would explain "The Defenders" and "Hawaii Five-O" and "Blue Bloods" and cutting two females on Criminal Minds and asking Melina Kanakaredes to take a pay cut, plus cancelling "New Adventures of Old Christine".
Remind me how well this strategy works when ABC becomes the No. 1 network with females on shows like Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Housewives, Castle, etc.

Melina Kanakaredes leaving CSI NY!
Supposedly she was asked to take a pay cut and she said no. Good for you, Melina. CBS, stop being so fucking cheap. You're the number one network in all of TV and you can support these salaries.
