He has a great father-daughter relationship with Belle, and chemistry with many other actors. Marlena is just not one of those people anymore, IMO. Maybe because its the same old. For instance, he has good chemistry with Bo when they work on police stuff together. Marlena and John just really need some polishing. Like, look at Bo and Hope, they never get tiring to watch. They're so fresh, alive, always interacting with other people, and working with one another.
