Veteran Actor/Producer will host acting classes in Columbia
By GREG MENZA/Staff Writer
Alan Dysert brings his 25 years of television, film and teaching experience to Columbia for a special two-day acting workshop to be held at the Columbia Dance Academy.
Millions of people know Dysert from his role as Sean Cudahy in the popular ABC-TV soap opera “All My Children.” The role landed him on the cover of People Magazine and guest spots on dozens of national talk shows. He’s also been seen in many films and television commercials. He has produced four feature films and is now editing a comedy film that he wrote and directed.
For the past several years, Dysert also has pursued his passion for teaching. He has taught and coached more than 3,000 actors, several of whom now have their own television shows. Dysert moved to Nashville some years ago after living in New York and Los Angeles. Since that time he has become known as “the acting coach to the country music stars.” His clients have included Dierks Bentley, Jo Dee Messina, Lee Greenwood and others.
His production credits include Academy of Terror, The Ghost Club, One of Them and Undercover Kids. Dysert also was cast in two feature films last year — Two Weeks, with Sally Field and Tom Cavanaugh and The Grift with John Savage and Jeremy London.
“The workshops will focus on the realities of acting in front of the camera — whether for film, a soap opera, a situation comedy, commercial or music video,” Dysert said. “Acting for the camera is very different from acting for the stage. It is absolutely essential that anyone wishing to pursue a career as an actor learns the hows and whys of acting for the various mediums and forums.”
Dysert said class sizes will be kept small in order to allow for more personal attention. Students will work with scripts from films, soap operas sit-coms and commercials as well as participate in improvisation exercises. A DVD of all class members will be made at the second class and sent to five agents and casting directors.
Classes will take place at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on April 29 and May 6 at Columbia Dance Academy at 1412 Trotwood Avenue, Suite 16 in the Neely’s Mill Shopping Center. The cost for the two-day workshop is $95. More information can be obtained by calling (931) 589-0455 or via e-mail at [email protected]
