In the novel "Sophie's Choice" (also the film) Sophie had to choose between which of her two children would live and which one would die. She was in a concentration camp and chose the boy to live, feeling he might have a better chance to survive the ordeal. She let her daughter go assumingly to be killed by the Nazis.
