I don't mind ranting. I enjoy hearing different points of view. I never expect everyone to agree, and your thoughts are always very well thought out and interesting.
Despite what John said, I didn't see it as a conquest to him. I honestly don't think he understands his own mind (or what little he has left as his conversation earlier indicated). If she were just a conquest to him, I think he'd have lied earlier when she asked if he was saying he loved her. I feel he was genuinely confused by his feelings, and struggling to understand them himself. One thing I'm sure of, he enjoyed being with her. Did he express his feelings in the best way? Not by a long shot, but that's why I loved it. I didn't get the feeling he felt anything other than sex with Ava, but he connected on a base level with Doc. I still view him as learning to feel (again as he mentioned earlier). I could be offbase, but I think a man who has a great experience with a woman might feel like John did, but 'knows' better than to act that way. The fact that John was just gleeful like a little boy made me laugh. I'm very curious to see what happens in the future because I've always felt Stefano did more than take John's memories. He short-circuited his wiring to try to control John. Just taking his memories alone wouldn't make John a pawn. (jmo - I'm more than willing to blame Stefano vs. my favorite char for all ills in soapland).
I didn't expect this scene to lead up to a magic reconciliation. I think they both were just overcome with emotions. In Marlena's case, even if you are moving on in a relationship, there are feelings there, particularly at the loss of a great love. John's turnaround and unusual display of feelings got to her when she was emotionally vulnerable. I feel that is perfectly natural. Deep down, she still loves him even if she doesn't love him as he is now. The kiss at the house was reminiscent of 86 J&M where they were the most magical to me. I always think of it as magic due to an ep where Anna told Roman(John) it was 'magic'.
I myself have not been overly happy with Marlena this summer, and my biggest complaint has been that she's been the opposite of the wonderful psychiatrist she was in 86. She was a great role model, perfect woman back then, and I do feel like she's changed. I've had many times thru the years where I feel like she was not written well, particularly when she plays Roman and John against each other (a pet peeve). But I still love her character, and given all she's gone thru with John dying and coming back different, I've been trying to give her a little slack. Even psychiatrists are people, and that's kinda a lot for anyone to take. I hope her stepping back will help her find herself again. I'd like for her and John to both end up as better people when this is done, but unfortunately can't control the writers.
Who on the show hasn't changed a lot thru the years? When I think of Kate, Vic, Tony, I honestly still have no clue who they really are because they've changed constantly over the years.
Given that you don't enjoy them as a couple, and they are the reason I got hooked on Days in 86, I don't expect us to agree. Honestly, much as I love them, there hasn't been a wonderful storyline for them (to me) since 97 and Kristen. I still watch and have scenes I love from 97 on, but those great storylines have been absent, imo, and I was hoping this one would be better than it has been (a real old-fashioned J&M angst-fest). Sadly, I don't think we will ever see writing like 86 again, not just for J&M, but Kim/Shane, Steve/Kayla, Bo/Hope. Back then, those writers were just amazing. They didn't focus on a couple, they focused on the story, and gave us meaningful wonderful details about the characters as they interacted with everyone in the cast. The couples were the natural result of great storytelling. Nothing like today.
Sorry for writing so much about a couple you don't really care for. They are very special to me, as are Bope, Payla, Tanna (when Tony is Tony).
