Young Max (three years old) is in bed, playing with his toy puppy. Page 1 * Young Max: Night, Charlie. Sleep tight. (Imitated dog, loudly) Woof, woof! Woof, woof! (Suddenly the door opens, Trent enters) Trent: What the hell's going on in here? Young Max: (scared) Nothing. Trent: You're supposed to be asleep. (re: puppy) Give me that. Young Max: (pulls dog under the cover) No. Page 2 * Trent: No? You're telling your father no? Who do you think you are, you little swine? Young Max: Please, Daddy. Charlie helps me sleep. Trent: Oh, yeah? Is that why you're still wide awake making all that noise? Now give me that damn dog, Max! (Max doesn't move) Trent: (cont) You little... (Trent goes and grabs the dog from under the cover and starts out) Young Max: (cries) Charlie! Charlie! Trent: You've got to learn to get along in life without toys, Max. Gotta learn. (Trent slams out of the room. On: young Max, sobbing) Fade to: black
