Probably. I always felt they had that feeling about Ashley Benson too, which is why they gave Melvin more material. I think it had more to do with Nick being a Hogan character. I just think he was so unique that only a writer like Hogan could take care of him and protect his integrity as a character. I don't think Higley could nor did she have an interest in doing so. I think Ed Scott was the reason he was kept in the first place. Notice the minute he is gone, Nick is gone. I think that is why the whole "Nick is psycho" thing came out of nowhere. Dena and Gary both agreed on axing him so they moved on it once they came together.
I'm glad he got something to play, as rushed and out of the blue as it was. I do have some issues with it but at least he went out with a bang and not some boring, quiet exit. He seems to appreciate that and I'm glad in a way it happened since he seemed he wanted to bolt at some point anyway.
