How is Philip much younger? He's been to war. Twice. And wounded twice. He's running a major corporation and now he's running the seedy side of the business as well. He's been married before along with being a father. This guy has lived more then most guys twice his age.
But Days chose to make Melanie 18. And though you can SORAS a character, it isn't something you can do overnight. And having Jennifer drinking in 1990 after starting college one year earlier is hardly a huge age jump. Having Melanie go from 18 to 21 or older is larger not in years but in experience. And if they are going to SORAS Melanie, they need to get a new actress because she's suffering from the same problem as RM, she just looks younger.
Numbers can be deceiving, especially on other boards. I think we can all remember one fan group who greatly inflated their numbers and I think it's quite possible with Melanie/Philip. Most of what I read is how much people HATE Melanie and that's Internet wide. I don't necessarily hate Melanie unless the show tries to make her more then she is. It's like their addiction to Darin Brooks which also was just as puzzling.
Well, people see them as teens because most of the time they act like it. People called Stax and Chex teen stories too. Technically they should be in college right now but they can't do that because it only highlights how Philip ISN'T in college and looks seedy if he starts hanging around college campus to see his girlfriend. Can you imagine the CEO of any corporation doing that? And while I do want Philip to have been seen as a sexier guy, that isn't all that he's about. In fact, I miss the old Philip who was brooding and cynical. Finding out Belle never loved him and kept going back to that nitwit Shawn would make anyone think less of "love" and what was wrong with keeping his handicap of the missing leg? If I was a soap writer, I would prefer to write a deeply layered character who has hardships and losses that help push him to be his own man rather then a rich playboy who is blindly doing his father's orders. But Dena goes for what is easier to write and shapes the character to fit her "lazy" storylines.
