THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS gets this awards in two categories. First, Nikki contracted a rare, dreaded -- and nameless, because it was pretend -- disease. In some real tearjerking scenes, she tired to come to grips with her fate. Handkerchiefs were dripping all over the place. Sound corny? It was, but it worked. Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) and Eric Braeden (Victor) milked those scenes for all they were worth, and it paid off. Which made the next development all the more interesting. Y&R's second award is for the best make-believe pretend disease. Because after Nikki found out she was in a miraculous remission, she pretended she was still dying. It was the only way to hang on to Victor, Nikki reasoned after seeing him in an embrace with his former mistress. So Nikki morbidly ordered her coffin, arranged her funeral, wore cosmetics to make her look sickly and refused to eat in front of Victor. Behind his back, she stuffed her face and frolicked with Victor's enemy, Jack. The fun was over when Victor caught on.
