MAGGIE HORTON, DAYS OF OUR LIVES
By incorporating actress Suzanne Rogers's struggle with myasthenia gravis into her character's story, DAYS presented this year's most realistic, inspirational and moving family drama. The disease was accurately chronicled from teh manifestation of early symptoms, to the diagnosis to the actual course of treatment. Watching Mickey, Maggie, Melissa and Sarah provided insight into how a family is torn apart and learns to cope with a loved one's illness -- an illness from which there is no magical soap opera cure. Suzanne Rogers's own strength, reserve and honesty are evident in the way the story avoided sensationalism and focused instead on the very real fears and physical problems that accompany the onset of myasthenia gravis.
