Another thing the writers need to do is have a plan. There's nothing I hate more than stories that zig-zag in every direction because the writers are making it up as they go along. It's so much easier to invest in a story when you know there's a plan in place and a payoff forthcoming.
remember the days of long drawn out buildups with amazing pay offs?
