I think there are plenty of ways to rotate characters...There are familial ties, but also why not make more characters interact as friends? Yes that's quite true. But it does not seem like the writers are thinking along this lines. Their primary focus appears to be couple development and love triangles. I believe that the reason they won't commit to a single powerhouse couple is because the characters that couple will consist of will be stuck in this pairing. This is why we're seeing shitty pairings like Safe and Dannifer right now. This way the characters are more flexible to move around story-wise. This is just a theory which I've concocted.
