But if a person has been on the show since the 80s, they do need a bigger exit than this. I think the writers and producers are afraid of losing viewers and that's why they no longer write big exits. They think if they can just usher popular characters off screen with as little fanfare as possible people won't even notice they're gone and fans of those characters will continue watching.
