Exactly. Obviously the scene is not meant to be about Sonny's declaration of love but about Lucas proving to Will that he approves of Sonny now that he know he loves Will. It's mentioned in the article that Will is surprised that Lucas tells him not because he thinks he should hear it from Sonny, but because he didn't think his father approved of Sonny no matter what. Lucas basically thought Sonny was using Will but because he couldn't articulate that fact in a manner that made sense, he was naturally perceived as homophobic. If he was really against WilSon because they are gay, he would have kept the info that Sonny loves Will to himself and I think Will realizes that in this scene.
