Maybe James knows Rafe will win in the end and doesn't invest in the doomed EJ/Sami relationship who knows what the reason is behind his acting choices. JS did say in an interview that he always play EJ with a hint of still wanting Nicole in case the writers went there again. He always seems to come alive when he's with Nicole despite KC's lock stock and barrel comment.
