I don't think they think he needs redeeming. I don't really disagree with that. I think tptb are trying to show us that daniel can remain true to a woman in the face of a hot looking ex looking to get him back AND presenting him with a son, so they can all be one happy family like they used to be. I don't know if redemption story is the right term but they are trying to make dan look like less of a sleeze.
