Soaps have a tendency to touch lightly on serius issues due to the fact that it becomes more of an actual issue with their storylines because of them airing 5 days a week. Homosexuality for instance seems to be widely just accepted in characters on prime time show because it's not necessarily part of the weekly context of the show. The character may be gay but it's not an issue in his profession on the show it's probably not directly hit on. Chicago Fire is the first show I have seen recently where they actually have an openly lesbian with lovers and kissing and even had eppisode where they pranked a newcomer into asking her out only for her to tell them they where punking him that she likes women.
