Quoting limited to 4 levels deep
which scenes are you talking about where he doesn't know how play? with Brady?

he does seem comfortable with Eileen, like he knows why John is doing what is doing..
IDK. The stuff airing now is what they were filming when Drake tweeted that he didn't understand John's motivations. Can't be sure which exact scenes they were, but for his sake I hope they were the ones where he looked completely clueless.
I honestly don't get why he's so clueless about how to play his scenes with Marlena, Brady or John's other loved ones. I'll give him that John's plan is completely stupid, but it's still pretty obvious IMO as to how he should be playing it. He's simply failing at giving his scenes any of the subtext of anguish and pain that he should be giving them. And it's making an awful story worse.
Maybe the writer/director won't let him play the subtext he feels as an actor would be true to the character. Maybe he wanted to play out the anguish and the notion that John was in hell over how he's having to treat Marlena for the sake of Da Plot, but he's getting direction to play it more ambiguously to throw the audience off and keep them guessing. Heck, maybe they're telling him to play it as if he's attracted to/ falling for Kristen, and he's scratching his head trying to figure out how to make that believable to the fans who, like him, know the history.

My sense is that the direction he's getting from the script and elsewhere is throwing him off his stride and boxing him in. Drake is in a no win situation. He knows that the story they're writing isn't true to character and is damaging to John and the J&M pairing. He knows that the fans hate it. And he probably knows that TomSell dislike the character of John and want him off canvas. Yet these are the cards Drake's being dealt. I think it must be tough to be party to the destruction of a character you've played for years and years. Sadly, many of the vets have gone through something similar over the years -- multiple times. Some of them are better at handling it than others. Heck, Drake was better at it in previous rounds. Maybe he's just fed up with the stupid games TPTB are playing at his expense.
