Wouldn't it have made more sense to put The Originals and Vampire Diaries on the same night? Or is it too many bloodsuckers on one night.
I think the network wants The Originals to be a success and being in a time slot after The Vampire Diaries has so far proven to be anything but a guarantee of success. There's an article on Zap2It that explains why: TVD tends to end an episode with such a shocking cliffhanger that people immediately run to their computers to comment on message boards and Twitter and don't stick around to watch what's next. The CW tried to make a post-TVD show a success 3 times so far. Nikita did get renewed (and renewed and renewed), but it could retain only a half of TVD's audience. The Secret Circle's ratings were on par with TVD for the first few episodes, but then dwindled. And Beauty and the Beast never stood a chance against that beast. It'll be interesting to see how Reign will do in that slot.
...Huh, that's kind of a brilliant explanation.

I'd still prefer to just have a VD night with the mothership and its spinoff, though. And wouldn't it be less likely for people to run off to tweet and whatnot if they were already hooked on elements of the show that follows?

I'm curious to see how "racy" the historical drama is. They're kind of competing with cable on that front, I don't know what the CW would be willing to pull off.
