It surprises me because the character is basically an extra, lol. Maybe not quite that bad but he's being completely overshadowed like Sami which is a chief complaint with any pairing of hers. It's also stupid. She's just not good enough to be the main one.

Funny enough I JUST read this short Emmy interview from JS where he talked about the same thing we are talking about...
EJ's done a lot of nefarious things over the years (especially to Sami), but Scott enjoys playing the various facets of the EJ character when given the chance. "My only concern is they only have me play one side at a time," he said laughing. "I wish they wrote the character to show all sides, at all times. I think over the last year they have gotten a lot closer to the essence of the character which has been really encouraging to me."
So going back to the original discussion around why JS is enjoying the writing for EJ right now, I think it's the balance of being able to play the softer romantic/family stuff and the darker stuff at the same time. I get that EJ isn't as dark as he has been in the past (and personally, I'd like to see him a little darker), but I do get JS's point to some degree. For the first time, EJ is getting to be with Sami and is also getting to do some not-so-nice things (plotting to steal DE from his dad, stealing MW secrets, openly hating Rafe, etc.) at the same time, without worrying he's going to lose Sami. Hopefully, the darker stuff becomes more prominent in the coming months.
