They have legitimate businesses, but they are fronts for the mob. It's not like there is a parent corporation called Gambino Enterprises controlled by a board filled with legitimate businessmen who can get together and decide to vote out Domenico Cefalu as the boss. Some of those legitimate businesses might be real corporations with actual board members, but the board seats are filled by members hand-selected by the mob and the actual mob hierarchy is completely separate.

WTF is with this EJ/Justin plot? Are we seriously supposed to believe that DiMera Enterprises has a Board that actually could vote Stefano out?
I know... I think the whole thing went downhill in 2008 when "New John" tried to take over DiMera enterprises. Till then, Stefano's "business" was pretty much a mafia type thing. He made money and no one asked how. But when Dena came in, she turned it into an actual business, and it hasn't been the same since.
The actual mafia has hundreds of legit businesses that make money besides the ones they launder money through, from clothing, coffee, casinos, bakeries, right up to healthcare and renewable energy. There is a reason
that the mafia hasn't been taken down, and a reason
for people to be afraid of them.
It's so beyond ridiculas, not to mention
boring  :bedtime:
, for Stefano to be taken down by two people, Justin and Sami's lapdog, sitting on their asses playing telephone tag. They aren't fearing for their lives, there's no tension or drama.
