A count, huh? I wonder who THAT could be. Also is seems that although Pat Falken Smith introed the DiMeras, it was Gary Tomlin who first mentioned them. Of course, it should also be noted that we're about to switch from Tomlin/Poteet-Lisanti to Falken Smith as HW in the middle of the very next week, so this could be a transitionary period. Also, it seems as if Tod was originally the actual strangler in Tomlin's story, but Falken Smith obviously decided to change it and extend the story out.
I don't think Gary introduced Tony. I just did some more digging and in the searchable Variety archives it states in the September 25, 1981 issue: Pat Falken Smith Heads New 'Lives' Writing Team...Pat Falken Smith has been signed as head writer for the NBC-TV soap "Days of Our Lives."

I think we have that situation we had recently where MarDar was still in the credits at the end of the Daysaster, but storyline tweaks were being started by the new writing team (Carrie/Austin/Jack/Madison's departures).

# 4041 was taped on Monday, September 28, 1981, so perhaps there were those same types of tweaks happening for that final week of Tomlin/Listanti episodes (4041-4045) before Pat and her team started being listed on the scripts as of 4046. In fact, I have the taping schedule for # 4043 (taped 9/30/81) and on it, it states that "An extra scene from 4047 will be taped directly following the Penthouse scenes", which turns out to be "Limbo Phone for Lee in Paris." So, I think it was Pat who introduced the first signs of Tony. Just my best guess though!

And, for the record, the dialogue writers for these couple of episodes in question are listed as:

4043...Charles Edwards
4044...Robin Amos
4045...Michael Robert David
4046...Margaret Stewart
4047...Maralyn Thoma
