Good week for Days. If not the preemptions on Friday they probably would have had even better numbers. And all the soaps are so close in W18-49, if the shows with much higher budgets are doing not much better than Days, I hope NBC is not unhappy with these numbers. They not good to me if they were just over 400,000 in women 18 to 49 a few years ago everyone would be saying this is terrible may be they don't care anymore and still renew it. But to me it shows how far Days has slipped that some are saying these are good ratings. |

Things have changed since a few years ago. 10 years ago they had over a million in that demo. That's not relevant anymore. We're comparing to last week and last year. This was a good ratings week for where Days and other soaps currently are. No one is claiming these are good compared to years ago. No one is ever doing that. Meanwhile, Days seems to be doing better midweek now than it was for a while. The high mondays followed by a consistent bottoming out doesn't seem to be happening anymore. Idk if that's really good or bad, but it's interesting. |

But look at the other soaps. It's a trend. (The same is happening to other shows -daytime and primetime). The viewing habits are changing, and it looks like the Nielsen company has some innovations planned, like measuring out-of -home viewing etc. Edited by thepadange, Dec 24 2016, 02:41 PM.

It's incredibly hard for TV shows to be stable in the demos over the years. In primetime this fall, most shows were down from last fall: http://tvline.com/2016/12/23/ratings-2016-2017-tv-season-winners-losers/ More and more young people watch their shows later in the week/month or/and on non-traditional platforms. That's why Nielsen publishes Live+3 and Live+7 ratings now (I've seen Live+30 too) and is working hard to develop ways to count those viewers on other platforms too. Thanks for sharing the article here by the way. Here's another factor. Look at the number of scripted shows available now, it has more than doubled in 6 years. Daytime soaps may not be included in those numbers but this is what they are up against. http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/more-tv-news/the-peak-of-peak-tv-keeps-climbing-455-scripted-shows-in-2016/ Edited by Hugo, Dec 24 2016, 03:16 PM.

Has anyone gotten an invite from Nielsen to download a little software thingy to your computer so they can see what you watch online? I've gotten 2 in the last 10 days, but didn't accept since I never watch anything online besides Youtube. |

We talked about the influence of the presidential campaign on the ratings, here's an article about it: http://www.latimes.com/business/hollywood/la-fi-ct-cable-ratings-year-end-20161228-story.html In primetime, Fox News was up 36%, CNN up 77%, MSNBC up 88% in total viewers Live + same day. Meanwhile, many top entertainment channels saw declines of 10% or more. I'm sure cable news networks took away viewers from daytime programs as well. The article also mentions that overall prime-time TV usage in the 18-to-49 age group was down 5% in 2016 and blames online viewing for it. |

Comparison with recent years, though, is very valid and informative. Take Days 2012 and 2015 - numbers wise they are similar: Households 2012: 1.82 Households 2015: 1.80 I take from this that comparing the last five years *is* worthwhile and really does tell us a lot about the popularity and success of the show (because the viewer numbers *are* still in the same ball park of possibility). Numbers can't tell the whole story of course, but the impacts of other factors can be better understood when we have the best data in front of us - and graphs showing a bunch of recent years are far more informative and reliable than stats which just show the difference between this year and last. When I previously posted a graph showing 2013-2016, I believe you said such graphs were "always so misleading" (or words to that effect). I strongly disagree with that for the reasons I have stated here. On the contrary, comparison with just one previous year can be misleading, and comparison with a bunch of recent previous years gives us a much better view. |
