Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
Yeah, we all interpret things differently. If we don't like something/someone we don't buy the story. That's our right. The show didn't show that the affair started because of self-loathing. There were no signs that they wanted to self-destruct back then when it started.
I agree that each of us interprets things differently.

What I saw was Phyllis and Billy both feeling enraged about situations like Jack/Victor/Delia/Adam/Marco/rape/Victor, etc. And then having been unsuccessful in getting the revenge they wanted, and then having no place to put that energy, so it turned inward to self-destruction. That's always what *I* saw on my screen. I felt that they were drawn together because of that, and the passion was because they both felt the other understood the inner rage. It made sense to me on that level. I do think they were genuine friends who cared about each other but that's all I saw.

Phyllis said as much a few months ago (long before Sally), and I remember reading a post here where the poster was surprised at what she said. But I wasn't surprised at all.

When a rape victim feels powerless, she can sometimes turn her rage inward. Sad but true.

That's my take on it.
While i kinda think the I love you portion came about too prematurely, I don't think the whole thing was totally destructive. There were lots of great things they had that could have been built upon further but Pratt threw the story completely out of whack and it all fell apart. Their friendship was really great and they just naturally get each other, the good and the bad, they don't judge each other, they can talk about anything, they both have a sense of humor, they call each other out when needed, they stick up for each other and most importantly they see the best in each other through all the crap that everyone else can't seem to get past. When half the town likes to treat them like punching bags, they are like each other's oasis, especially for Billy because at least Phyllis has Michael and Lauren to support her. Billy has literally no one.

Anyhow, I think in the last 2 months it seems like they have gotten back to these fundamentals so I don't think its out of the realm of possibility for them to start over fresh the proper way if the writers would allow them to. At least the door is not as glued shut as it was 3 months ago.

Right. Philly really began as a friendship and there weren't any romantic tones until they suddenly kissed in the Chancellor Mansion during that storm. Up until that point they were basically best friends. They were great support systems for each other; which we still see a little bit of that now when they have their small scenes like the online dating disaster.

While I agree with nananana7, that their anger and lust for revenge was the stepping stone for them bonding but there were also other contributing factors to the affair that actully got buried underneath by the affair. Which is so insanely frustrating. There were some good character and story beats that could have been played but they were ignored until the last damn minute when they couldn't do any good.

Phyllis & Jack were going back & forth between being a loving couple and Jack treating Phyllis like his wayward daughter/Phyllis picking fights with him about Victor. The fact that he could have taken Victor down, possibly for good, but chose not to do so was a point of contention between him & Phyllis. We even saw after the Ian Ward cabin kidnapping, Jack was acting waaaaay too forgiving of Victor and making just as many excuses for "the mustache" as Victoria and Nikki were. This attitude towards the man that put a murderous drug kingpin in Phyllis bed and in the lives of their friends & family is what originally led Phyllis to emotionally distance herself from Jack and lie about her revenge schemes with Billy.

Victoria & Billy. Well, it's the same old same old with them. They were in a very good place but Victor does something heinous and Victoria takes up for her father while abandoning Billy and throwing stones at Victor's victims. Billy finally got his balls back and decided enough was enough and left Victoria in the dust. He wasn't self-destructing. In fact, he was taking care of himself because of the kids. For some dumb reason, everyone in the show kept telling him that he would spin out of control without Victoria. Like? That's such an unhealthy thing to say to someone, anyone, let alone someone with a history of addiction. Billy even bought B&S was genuinely working on the business. He even poached one of Jabot's biggest suppliers, lol. He was doing relatively good even during the affair & post-affair reveal. It's not until recently that his character has taken a major dumpster dive.

Pratt messed up Philly in 3 ways:

1) He had them say "I love you" too damn soon
2) The affair was made the sole reason for broken Phack when they were already horribly cracked before Philly
3) Related to 2) because Philly was made the sole reason for the divorce we never got to see Phyllis confront Jack about how/when/why their marriage truly failed again.

well Colin is persona non grata at the Hospital.
Billy/Jill must have given the hospital instructions not to let him near her room.

you know how they can make AH hair better on screen.
