It also doesn't mean a huge amount if Days beats it because Days is more expensive to produce and is not completely owned or produced by NBC.
If anything, it just shows NBC that launching a successful new talk show is very difficult. I think that's an indirect positive for Days.
I think the fact that CBS renewed Y&R (which is a more expensive show than Days) with it's rapidly declining demos for another three years means that these shows aren't so unprofitable as it may seem.
Of course NBC is not CBS but still...

I wonder how much they spend between 2005-2007 to use songs and singers on they show I know the show still had a big budget in those days but still they had Donald Trump, Clay Aiken, Smokey Robinson they played Rolliing Stones songs also show a real concerts, had Rex Brady sing I got you babe, had country music and singers .
2009 was the big budget cut. That's when they went to the new production schedule of shutting down 15+ weeks a year. They fired Deidre, Drake, Mary Beth, Thaao, Stephen.

April 2004-March 2009
Length of Contract: Five Years (April 2004-March 2009)
Weekly Budget: $1.7 Million-$1.8 Million/per week
Variety Article: (6/2/03) (By Josef Adalian)

April 2009-September 2010...$750,000 less per week
Length of Contract: 18 Months (April 2009-September 2010) (18 Months plus a one-year automatic pick-up based on Nielsen ratings through September 2011, which was picked up by NBC in March 2010)
Weekly Budget: $1.05 Million/per week (per Ken Corday's autobiography...40% cut of last contract) (New shooting schedule goes into effect: no more overtime/Saturday tapings; must be out by 6PM each day; tape a full month of episodes in 3 weeks; studio dark for a week once per month)

Ratings for Megyn Kelly's daytime show.
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/more-tv-news/megyn-kelly-today-gets-out-of-the-gate-slowly-at-nbc/

Megyn Kelly Today (September 25-27)
Households: 2.0
Women 25-54: 0.8

Days of our Lives (September 11-15)
Households: 1.58
Women 25-54: 0.73

I think if Days could beat Megyn in the demo, it would be a good argument for the renewal.
It's her first week of ratings, when people check out her show. The second week of ratings will be more important, to see how much of a drop-off there is, or if it stays stable. She's already annoyed Debra Messing and Jane Fonda on her first three days on the air, so I don't know how many celebs will be making second appearances.

This whole thing is kind of strange to me. I don't imagine it would cost 20k if they used an old standard or some public domain song or something?
No. Public domain is fine. That's why they had Kassie sing Beautiful Dreamer.

Even "Happy Birthday" was copyrighted until a year or so ago, and licensing fees had to be paid for tv/film to use it.
Can't they use old songs with the expired copyrights (pre-1922)?

They also used the instrumental version of Beautiful Dreamer for Brady and Kristen. Did EM really play it or did they use some record?

I have watched Megyn Kelly every day this week and I like her talk show.
I wouldn't watch Smelly Kelly if my life depended on it, not even if the cast of DAYS were on her show.

DAYS must have had some deal with The Rolling Stones because they played "Streets of Love" in every episode for like two weeks.
I tracked down the press release on the archive...

NBC'S 'DAYS OF OUR LIVES' ROCKS TO THE ROLLING STONES FOR MULTIPLE EPISODES IN DECEMBER AS KEY CHARACTERS ATTEND THE STONES CONCERT
BURBANK, Calif. -- November 30, 2005 -- Continuing its unprecedented partnership with the Rolling Stones, NBC's popular daytime drama "Days of our Lives" has taped scenes featuring four of its core characters attending the November 4 Rolling Stones concert in Anaheim, California. Footage of the "Days" characters at the Stones concert will air December 16, 19 and 20, it was announced today by Annamarie Kostura, Vice President, NBC Daytime Programs.

On November 4, "Days of our Lives" sent four of its most popular actors to Anaheim, California for the Rolling Stones concert. The "Days" characters were prominently featured in the audience at the concert and shown on the big screen behind stage as The Stones performed.

"Having 'Days of our Lives' actors attend the Rolling Stones concert was an amazing opportunity to take this partnership to the next level," said Kostura. "Fan reaction to the Rolling Stones video premiere and the reception that the 'Days' actors received at the concert illustrate the show's continued relevance in pop culture in this, its fortieth year."

Randy Miller, Virgin Records' Executive Vice President, Marketing, noted, "with 'Days of our Lives' celebrating its 40th anniversary and its continued popularity as the #1 daytime drama amongst women 18-34, the show was the perfect vehicle for continuing to promote the Rolling Stones' new CD 'A Bigger Bang.'"

Considered the greatest rock-n-roll band of all time, the Rolling Stones continue their tremendous popularity 40 years after they began touring. Since their most recent tour kicked off in August 2005, the Stones have continued their electrifying performances to sold out crowds and have included new hits from their critically acclaimed CD "A Bigger Bang" which was released in September 2005.

"Days of our Lives" premiered on November 8, 1965 as a half-hour daytime drama and expanded to one hour 10 years later. The series has gone on to become one of daytime drama's rare mainstays and its cast and crew just celebrated its 40-year anniversary earlier this month.

The show is produced by Corday Productions Inc. in association with Sony Pictures Television. Executive producer, Ken Corday, is following in the tradition of his parents, Betty and Ted Corday, who co-created "Days of our Lives" and helmed the series for many years. Stephen Wyman is also co-executive producer. James Reilly is the head writer.

And here's the Smokey Robinson press release...

SMOKEY ROBINSON BARES HIS SOUL ON NBC'S HIT DAYTIME DRAMA 'DAYS OF OUR LIVES' IN NOVEMBER

BURBANK, Calif. -- October 5, 2006 -- Legendary artist Smokey Robinson will guest star on NBC's hit daytime drama "Days of our Lives" November 14 and 15 (1 p.m. in most markets) and will perform "I Love Your Face" from his recent album Timeless Love.

In the two-episode story arc, Marlena Black (Deidre Hall) is lost in the snowy wilderness and is startled by a mysterious man carrying an ax! She learns it's none other than Smokey Robinson who just so happens to be vacationing at a secluded cabin nearby. He rescues her from the cold and brings her back to his place to recover in front of a warm fire and calls the authorities. Later, John (Drake Hogestyn) tracks Marlena down at the cabin and Smokey gives an impromptu performance for the reunited couple singing "I Love Your Face."

An acclaimed singer-songwriter whose career spans over four decades of hits, Robinson's recent release Timeless Love features some of the most romantic songs from jazz, big band as well as traditional pop standards of the '20s, '30s and '40s. He continues to thrill sold-out audiences around the world with his voice, impeccable timing and profound sense of lyric. His lifetime achievements include 36 Top 40 hits, a Grammy Living Legend Award, berths in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters' Hall of Fame, and the Soul Train Heritage Award among numerous other honors. This December, Robinson will receive a Kennedy Center Honor for his lifetime contribution to the arts and American culture.

"Days of our Lives" is produced by Corday Productions Inc. in association with Sony Pictures Television. Executive producer, Ken Corday, is following in the tradition of his parents, Betty and Ted Corday, who co-created "Days of our Lives" and helmed the series for many years. Stephen Wyman is also co-executive producer. Hogan Sheffer is the head writer.

"Francisco San Martin Joins 'The Bold and The Beautiful' as a Conniving Masseur"
Comments on his Days stint...is he referring to MB, CB, and GG?
https://www.tvinsider.com/446601/francisco-san-martin-joins-cast-the-bold-and-the-beautiful/
Hmmm I've always heard the exact opposite from other actors. Weird. The set if BnB from my perception would be more judgmental than Days. Snob comes to mind...

Yeah, I agree. I think the mediocre (as I understand it) showing of the Talk, along with Megyn Kelly's performance at least tells NBC execs that they aren't going to just be able to throw some programming in there and suddenly make money hand over fist. I'm sure that Megyn Kelly's show is substantially cheaper (ever with the buckets of money they threw at her). But I think Days has some extra value, or status, just based on it's longevity and a deeper connection to its audience. So, I think NBC would want to build something that gave it a reason to get rid of Days (i.e. Kelly's show is over the moon and they need another hour, or they need something that fits in with it better, etc.). If Kelly's show tanks, it's not going to provide that springboard and I think that makes Days place a little more secure than it might otherwise be.
They've lost so many millions of dollars on Kelly after her nighttime venture tanked and now this morning show is flopping with guests going public saying they regret doing it, cameraman cursing on air, Kelly looking like a deer caught in the headlights and critics labeling it a train wreck... NBC can't afford to try another show to replace Days. Kelly will be gone, she'll be replaced and things will stay as is.
They won't get rid of Kelly for a while....even if she tanks.

They have way to much money invested in her. They will hold on and try to make her work before they pull the plug.

Agreed. They have too much invested in her to drop her that quickly.

Her Sunday night show also received abysmal ratings this summer, but I read this morning that it's scheduled to be back on-air after the Winter Olympics.

If ratings get worse and worse, they'll probably shuffle her around to some other role on the regular Today Show.
