Y&R got very close to its all-time low in the W18-49 demo (421,000). That's not good in December!

No wonder CBS posted their press release about the next week's ratings LOL.

What is weird is that they had their lowest days not on the pre-empted weekdays  .

Also from the numbers I have they are very close (only +2,000) to their all-time low in the W24-54 demo (689,000).

I thought the morale among Y&R fans was better since Mal replaced Sally so I'm a little bit surprised it's still struggling so much.

I have been watching all year but I haven't really connected to Y&R the way I connect to the other soaps, I still feel like an outsider. :-/

It depends on the board, I guess LOL. Fans who liked SSM's writing are not happy with MY.

I, personally, think that their ratings were so high and stable over the last 7 years (I don't have the ratings before 2011), they even had gains in total viewers - their ratings in 2014, 2015 and 2016 (averages) were better than in 2011, 2012 and 2013, maybe the time came for them to go down a little bit too and nothing will help?

I am enjoying Mal's writing a lot, I love how he structures the episodes and writes in surprises but he has to start writing long-term high-stake stories soon, otherwise the show will become too low-key.

Ron is still behind Dena and Ryan overall but he's getting closer.

Dena and Ryan 9/6/16-7/18/17 (219 episodes) = 2,183,000 viewers
Ron 7/19/17-12/22/17 (110 episodes) = 2,171,000 viewers

The gap is bigger if you compare the same timeframe.

Dena and Ryan 9/6/16-12/23/16 (77 episodes) = 2,250,000 viewers
Ron 9/5/17-12/22/17 (77 episodes) = 2,221,000 viewers

Maybe the show is paying the Pratty years now, a lot of viewers got used to all the action and are bored since Pratt left.

Yes, it might be that a big part of viewers who came for Pratt-type stories left when SSM started.

It is actually pretty easy to say what type of stories result in good ratings on Y&R. In 2013 it was Delia's death and aftermath (written by Griffith, continued by Altman and Passanante) peaking in February 2014 with "the last" fight between Billy and Adam when both Miller and Muhney left. Then there were returns of Phyllis and Adam as Gabe that spiked their ratings in fall 2014 (Altman, Passanante).
Pratt had in general very solid ratings in 2015-2016 until JFP left (accidentally or not IDK). Their ratings in Summer 2015 were remarkably high, especially for Summer. The stories featured were Gabriel revealed as Adam, lots of Chadam, Avery's rape and exit, Lily's affair with Joe, Marco/Jack/Phyllis culmination and aftermath, Sharon's miscarriage.

Guessing from that, Adam's return with a good story could be promissing. But it's also a very risky move because they need a very good charismatic actor for fans to accept him.

It does seem that Michael Muhney and Justin Hartley were both very popular as Adam. Should they recast again?

Hartley is definitely not coming back anytime soon with the success of This Is Us. And Muhney returning would probably cause a lot of drama behind the scenes, after the allegations of sexual harrassment and several co-stars speaking against him. I never hear about Chris Engen, I think he broke his contract when he left so I doubt the show would want him back.
