This is from Soap Opera Digest in 2001. I found it tonight while looking through an old issue.
Jed Allan (Ed, PORT CHARLES) on ageism in Daytime:
"They're hiring much younger [today]. The people who they're hiring are younger, so the people who are older aren't watching as much. That, I think, is a big mistake. You would think the networks know that by now, but they refuse to admit to it and they need to change their attitudes about that. There's major ageism in the business. It's rampant not only in soap operas, but mainly in soap operas. All you have to do is turn on a show, and you will rarely see anyone over 35. There are those people who are on some of the shows that have been there for years and years and years, like YOUNG AND RESTLESS's Eric Braeden [Victor] and those guys on GENERAL HOSPITAL. Even on DAYS [OF OUR LIVES] there are a few, but they're hardly being used. The overall picture is it's a shame that they're not using an older element. The actors who are older, generally are more trained - taking nothing from the young kids. But they're still young, and they're learning. The older men and women have been through it - they've been through the wars in soap operas. They know what they're doing and take a lot less time to do it; a lot less time is expended wasting time. It's a young people's world right now."
