Another World CANCELLED!
Dateline 04/12/99

This evening I sit here writing this article with a heavy heart. I received via email, the notice that Ultimate TV was reporting Another World had been cancelled. I immediately posted this information on my bulletin board and then checked my own contacts for verification. In a press release issued today from NBC they have announced that this is unfortunately true. It's a sad day for Another World fans, many of which have watched the show for over 30 years.

Emmy award winning Another World premiered on May 4, 1964 and is NBC’s longest-running soap opera. Another World was also the first soap to evolve to the one-hour format paving the way for other soap operas to follow. Add to that the fact that Another World is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year and has a brand new coffee table book coming out this month titled Another World: The 35th Anniversary Celebration. This month also brings the Another World fan club luncheon and a demonstration was planned to help save the show. Another World fans were (are still?) going to gather at the NBC Today Show studios. No, this announcement does not spark the good vibrations in soap opera land.

To sum up the information from NBC's press release concerning the new NBC daytime line-up this summer, NBC will air Days of Our Lives at 1:00 pm. Days is considered by NBC to be the cornerstone of its daytime line-up. 2:00pm will bring the new James E. Reilly soap Passions starting July 5th. Passions will be replacing Another World which will air for the last time on June 25th.

“I thank all the people working on Another World for an incredible job at giving their audience an amazing 35 year run. It was a very tough decision. However, these changes allow us to take a major step toward putting our shows in pattern, which is critical to our success in this daypart,” said Scott Sassa, NBC entertainment president.

Another World fans believe the show was chosen as the loser due to the networks desire to own and control the shows they air. Another World is owned by Procter & Gamble, Passions is owned by NBC, and they have part ownership in Sunset Beach as well.

Procter & Gamble's Executive-in-Charge Mickey Dwyer-Dobbin released a statement saying... "We haveknown for some time that NBC's decision could go either way. Although we certainly wish the outcome were different, it is a sad comment on the television industry as a whole that a soap, especially one with so much history, has to be canceled to make room for a new one. The loss of a show is a loss for the industry."

NBC has picked up a six month option for Sunset Beach, which allows the fledgling soap to remain on the schedule through the end of 1999. (Please note...with the latest news concerning the possibility that NBC may be moving toward a dual soap format, and dropping an hour of their daytime scheduling in the near future, this does not assure a place for Sunset Beach down the road.)

Fans are currently discussing options on how to share their anger and disgust with NBC. Some want to boycott, others are coming up with more devious measures. The hurt and anger run deep within this group. I'll keep you updated on the measures being taken in future articles.

Please feel free to share your feelings on this news with me by joining our discussion on the cancellation of Another World. I'll be forwarding posts from my bulletin board to NBC at a later date.
