Wikipedia has a great article on the black era of US History that resulted in many in the entertainment industry being blacklisted and deemed Commies. The URL is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_blacklist There are many on the list there that have ties to soap operas in some form. Many of these blacklisted performers were relegated to working in soaps too because of the black list. Eddie Albert Orson Bean Barbara Bel Geddes Alfred Drake Howard Duff Jose Ferrer Lee Grant Uta Hagen Kim Hunter Sam Jaffe (husband of soap actress, Bettye Ackerman) Leon Janney Joseph Julian George Keane (was married to the great radio soap actress, Betty Winkler) Victor Kilian Meg Mundy Anne Revere Jean Rouverol Martha Scott Ann Shepherd Gale Sondergaard Betty Winkler Lesley Woods I possibly missed some. If I did please point them out. This is a sad period in the history of the US. So many of these stars had their careers ruined by this. ETA: Some names left off the list. |

Great thread, Steve. I can also add Victor Kilian to the list. He played Mary Hartman's grandfather on 'Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.' I'm sure there are many others to add to this, as many from the blacklist sought jobs on Soaps or off Broadway. Some just left the country and went back to their homelands and who could blame them? It's a nasty part of our American history that we should never forget. |

Jean Rouverol could be added to the list too. She never acted in soaps like she did the movies, but after the blacklist she worked as a writer on Search For Tomorrow, Guiding Light, and As The World Turns. |
