After all... tomorrow is another day!
Days of our Rapes
I’ve never been much for Lifetime movies unless they have outrageously cheesetastic titles like “Mother, May I Sleep with Danger?” or “Friends ‘Til the End.” I thought the rape whistles that the RAs handed us co-eds my freshman year in the dorms were a total joke that would do nothing to help victims when they're attacked (I still think this). I admit as an unabashed GDI (God-Damned Independent) in college there may have been a time or two I cattily referred to sorority girls as sorostitutes.
Yet somehow, some way, I am actually enjoying the serial rapist storyline featuring the sorority gals on this show? How did this happen?
Maybe it’s just a relief that it’s not being told as horrifically as I was anticipating given the huge fuckup that was the EJami rape/sextortion aftermath. Sure, Ford Decker is a caricature of a rapist and it’s silly that when one in six college females are victims of sexual assault on campus they give off the vibe that all of the rapists will be as demonstrably shady as this one frat guy who stereotypically traffics in roofies.
But I think both Cordy and Stephanie (who seems to have had something awful happen to her if it wasn’t rape) are believable in their grief and shame and confusion over what happened to them and I feel for them. I also worried for Morgan’s safety when she was nearly another of Ford’s victims. I do see a lot of dramatic potential for this storyline, especially in Stephanie’s case if the writers take the opportunity to mine the painful histories of Kayla and also possibly Adrienne on this issue and have them talk with Stephanie about what happened to her to bring this all full circle and help Stephanie deal with what she is feeling.
Now that said… another part of me that bristles at this storyline even existing no matter how well it’s executed. I don’t watch soaps for messages and even if the networks have discontinued after school specials I don’t think it’s the responsibility of soaps to pick up the slack. I ask where is the love in the afternoon and when will the misogyny and victimization of women stop?
I hate that the show may have crafted this story with the intention of making Stephanie a more sympathetic character by making her a victim. I also don’t believe that if this is the show’s attempt to answer charges of critics of their handling of the EJami storyline that they have “rewarded a rapist” by giving EJ a child with Sami conceived of the rape/sextortion and allowing the two to marry that this more sensitive portrayal of a rape storyline will curry any favor with these people.
I just hope when the smoke clears from this current co-ed storyline that Hogan Sheffer will have the rape issue out of his system and we can all move on from this.
So this show can go back to being “Days of our Lives” instead of “Days of our Rapes.”
Performer of the week – Deidre Hall (Marlena) … I don’t care if she only had like that one scene at the pub talking about how she wanted to kill EJ. I love psycho doc and I’m not going to apologize for it.
Episode of the week – Tuesday … Chick reunited and it feels so good while Jett gets blown off? Really sad goodbye for cuties, Artemis and Demarquette? Good Payla-plus-Stephanie bonding? Max and Morgan cuteness? No Ejamicas? My episode of the week.
Scene of the week – Belle and Sami’s talk on Wednesday … I loved the sisterly moment from these two who haven’t had very many of these over the years. It was fun to see shades of old anti-Brady Sami as she coached Belle to lie about what she did with Phillip because it would stand in the way of getting what she wanted with Shawn and didn’t judge her whatsoever for what she’s done. It was also fun to see Belle call out Sami for her “weird vibe” with E.J.
Couple of the week – Bo and Hope … I know it’s Bo’s birthday but it feels like mine with the nice surprise of their cuteness in Friday’s episode with the photo album and the hilarity of their celebration getting interrupted by all of Kayla’s phone calls.
Salem stooge of the week – Zombie John … When they killed him I said – they woke up John from the coma for this? When I saw him appear in Sami’s dream I said – they woke up John from the dead for this?
Scene-stealer of the week – Ciara Alice Brady … Why do the cutest babies on earth all live in Salem?
Line of the week – Nick (Thursday) … Tonight is about you and me. Ever been touched by an angel?

Seriously, I'm fully in love with you at this moment. Thanks for another awesome column!
This is my all-time favorite movie title, and I refer to it often in conversation even when it's not really appropriate because it's just that awesome. Love you for mentioning it.
Once again you give me a word I yearn to use in daily life (the first was 'sextortion'). If only I had the proper context or could, like, create the proper context.
You also gave a shout-out to afterschool specials! Bonus points for hating tv shows with a Message.
I like this storyline, mostly because Morgan is the most promising female character in years. And she has no connection to the sex industry yet (unlike other good female characters like Billie, Kate and Nicole, or wannabe good character Willow). I'm kind of...I think I'm non-reactive to rape on soaps at this point so I haven't really felt anything about the storyline yet. That's a little disconcerting.
Question for you: do you think this storyline needs to show a rapist get punished for his actions instead of being redeemed? And I mean like full-on trial & conviction punished.

After all... tomorrow is another day!
Um thank you for being in love with me? LOL.
I'm glad you enjoy my bizarre lexicon. Sextortion was all me, but I think my friend Lynsee should get credit for sorostitutes. I'm pretty sure I got that from her back in the day.
As for your question for me... I don't know what needs to happen in this storyline. Is it weird if I don't really have an opinion? Man it's been so long since I've just sat back and watched something unfold this feels funny. Like you, I'm a total Morgan fan and ecstatic for a female character who is not a mean girl stereotype though she stands in the way of a supercouple's child getting the man she wants nor is she an ex-hooker/porn star. I suppose I want whatever she wants basically.
I mean obviously I hope Ford goes to jail and other bad shit happens to him because he's a bad dude, but it's not like him going to jail will undo the trauma Stephanie and Cordy and the others have gone through so if he isn't punished I won't be wringing my hands over it. I also don't think Ford is a compelling enough or multi-dimensional enough character with enough ties to the canvas and his portrayer's chemistry with the other actor is enough to warrant Ford getting a stab at redemption though I have always felt that way about EJ.
Does that answer your question?

Another very good column, Mary. I had to smile about the girls getting whistles for security reasons on campus, as if... Back during my days in college if a sister was attacked or raped no one believed it or cared. We've come a long way, Baby. Next time your generation sees an aging Baby Boomer like me, go up and thank them for starting the Women's Movement and for standing up and fighting for our rights as women. There is still much to do, but things are better.
Days sorority sister rape story line was written fairly well. I'm hoping against hope Hogan may have written it more realistically so that the EJ/Sami mess would look a bit more, softer, for lack of a better word. I'm one who believes EJ raping Sami was something that was not well thought out on the writer's part - something put in for dramatic value when Hogan thought James Scott was just another actor to put up against Lumi.
I'm positive Hogan and everyone else did not foresee the fanbase James Scott would gain as EJ on Days, otherwise the rape would not have happened. We fans all know how the old, impulsive, but predictable Sami would have reacted to the charming EJ; she would have been swept off her feet and had a one night stand with him. Hell, she almost did. The rape was not needed, it's that simple.
While watching the 2nd episode of "I Wanna Be a Soap Star" James appeared as an attending physician while James Reynolds was the dying patient. This was most likely filmed many months ago in the early spring. After James Reynolds' character 'died' Hogan told the Soap Wannabees, "I can tell you who killed your father, (Reynolds) it was that doctor! This guy is going to kill everyone in Salem!" he said referring to James Scott. At that time EJ as killer bad boy DiMera must have been the likely intention and scenario, that is, until the James Scott fanbases started up, and the Lumi and newly formed Ejami fans started howling. And the madness continues...

Great column once again. An nothing beats a cheesy Lifetime movie. ;)
I took your advice (from the Nov. 2nd thread) and caught the rerun of Friday's show on Soapnet. Definitely enjoyed the bulk of the show. Still can't get into all of the Ejamicus stuff but did see potential in the college story. There is something different about the show.

Well glad to hear DOOL didn't make a liar out of me ;) and that this soap was able to give you something enjoy even with the EJamicas mess.

||I would really like to see how the ratings are this week, can they keep the momentum and possibly break into the top 4?|
