Contestants will be able to show off more of their talents this season: The Hollywood round of American Idol 7’s audition process begins this week, and for the first time in the show’s history, contestants will be allowed to play instruments when they sing. “We knew Chris Daughtry, Carrie [Underwood] and Bo [Bice] could play the guitar but we really couldn’t show it. If [the contestants] can play an instrument this year we want to be able to see that, and we’ll introduce a couple of days of that during Hollywood week,” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe told the New York Post. That may or may not continue to the semi-final and final rounds of the competition in the spring. “We’ll make a decision when we see how many really talented people we have,” he said. He also said that American Idol’s tour, which didn’t do well this year, may be combined with the tour from his other series, So You Think You Can Dance. “I’d love to see the ‘Dance’ tour go out with the ‘Idol’ tour and put the singing and dancing together. They should never be separate. I’d like to see that happen,” Lythgoe said. |

Been there Done that. Canadian Idol beat them to the punch and did it this past season. |

Of course it didn't. They had a really shitty group last season. I didn't really like any of them that much. The instrument thing sounds cool though, but not if it doesn't continue on to the finals. |

The tour sucked because other then two or three people, the group was bad and there wasn't a whole lot of personality either. I don't like combining the tour with the dance tour. Idols going to have good years and bad years dependent on the singers it has. If it gets a good group, they will see major ratings and major success on tour. I like the instrument thing but it must be something we see through the whole competition. It adds something unique and I think people will love it so much that not using it all year would turn people off. |

Amen! Worst season to date IMO but I am glad that Jordin is finally getting airplay. Tattoo is a catchy little diddy. |

I don't like the idea of Idol and Dance touring together, either. Like most of you think, if Idol has a lot of personality and good contestants, it will rock. Last year was so lackluster. There were only two who had talent and neither of them swept you away with personality, I'm talking about Melinda and Jordin as I didn't care for Blake at all. |
