Things I've Learned Watching Soaps
Dateline 06/30/00

Soap operas are just full of life lessons. Here are a just a few things we've learned...as compiled from a recent thread on the Soap Operas Forum.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No wedding ever goes off without a hitch.

Most folks always have a twin and you're lucky if there's only one.

Someone is always with a current spouse and still has kids by their ex.

You can commit a crime while working anywhere and still get hired back at your old job or get a promotion.

You and your spouse can always become friends with your formal family members regardless of what has come to pass between you.

Someone is always having a child with someone else's man.

When you lose your job you will still be able to pay your rent and have plenty of food and go to the biggest parties!

It is always quicker to drive over to someone's office to have a conversation with them.

If you do choose to use the phone, you can save time by hanging up without saying goodbye.

EVERYBODY knows EVERYBODY'S cell phone numbers (mortal enemies included.)

Even obscure numbers like the justice of the peace, they never have to look it up.

Women give birth to three or four month old babies.

Husbands believed to be deceased always find their way back home when their widowed wife is about to be remarried and vice versa. In other words, if you want to raise the dead, try saying "I do."

If you suspect a murderer is trying to get into your house make sure you turn your back to the door as you call for help so you can't see him enter and sneak up on you.

Same goes for not wanting someone to overhear your conversation. Turn away from the door so you can't tell if that person is about to come in or pass by the door.

If you are happily married someone you know wants to break up your marriage so they can marry and have your spouse all to themselves and you never have a clue.

If you decide to take up a singing career, you will instantly make it big.

If you are a widow or widower, expect your presumed dead spouse to show up at your wedding.

Don't trust your memories of the past, they could have been planted inside your head.

Your personality may be controlled by a computer chip in your head, or in your teeth.

You may come to town as another character's relative, but as time goes by you discover that you are indeed that other character.

When you come to town, you instantly make friends with someone who lets you live in their guest house for free.

Your child, who is five today, becomes sixteen within a matter of months.

If you miscarry, stick padding under your shirt for a few months, then steal a baby from a dazed and confused mother. Tell her that her baby died, then pass the child off as yours to the unsuspecting father.

Get married at least three times to the "love of your life"-preferably every two to three years. Make sure that you have a huge wedding each time, and don't forget a fancy dress, complete with a veil and long train.

If you join the police force, expect to be made a detective within a couple of months, or be given plum undercover assignments as a rookie. If you are a woman, you can have an open romantic relationship with one of your superiors, without any flak from the department.

If you are new in town and are a doctor, you can walk into the hospital one day, and begin working there the next.

You can stay friends with all of your exes, and their current spouses.

You can have a prince fall in love with you and want to marry you, despite the fact that you are a single mom and former stripper. You don't even mind that he was married to your sister, because in time she will forgive your betrayal.

I've also learned that you can have big corporations, a downtown, a hospital, a police station, a resort area and a university in a town with only 40 residents!

Live. Love. Laugh. ♥

The biggest life lesson I've learnt it, paternity results are never for certain. Its so easy to manipulate DNA results, and the father of the child can never be predetermined with fair certainty.

No one ever seems to notice that big events like weddings, balls, toronados, and the like only seem to happen in February, May or November.

Despite the fact that it's supposed to be a small town, there are skyscrappers and from those skycrappers you can see a large sprawling city out of the window.

From watching GL, you can have a funeral, a barbeque, and a carnival all on main street.

Most people live in houses without a fourth wall.

Some of the most richest and wealthiest people move to small towns to live and run their own companies there.
