Hey guys... Just got back from the Drake personal appearance in Peoria. Before I get into the juicy stuff I just have to say it was quite fun being a soap fangurl for the night. I'm the sort of person who for the most part keeps my DOOL freak flag on the down low in real life so it was fun meeting some of the other obsessives as we all waited in line for Drake. (Everyone around me seems to think Belle is a hussy and this 60ish woman in line behind me admitted she couldn't help looking up EJ's hospital gown during that one scene this week that his blanket got ripped off.) When he got there I was shocked at how skinny Drake is. He looked good, but just way skinnier than I was expecting. Not that I expected anything different, but I can enthusiastically report Drake was a total sweetheart with all of his fans, giving lots of hugs and fun posed pictures and gracious and thoughtful answers to questions and comments. I've not been to other soap star appearances before so I have nothing to compare it to, but I have to say this one was probably a bit unique in that it was in a hockey arena during a game so as opposed to other fan events I would guess there was a larger percentage of drunk people not expecting to encounter a soap star who then freaked out when they saw him than might occur at other fan appearances like say... women's lifestyle expos. I couldn't even count how many people there were who were coming from the nearby concession stand with beers in their hands and freaking out when they saw "John Black." In one funny moment, there was this girl who was celebrating her birthday at the game with a bunch of her girlfriends and screamed when she saw him and Drake wound up giving her a birthday kiss. I forgot my camera (today was pretty hectic... I spent the morning/afternoon at a football game) so I don't have any pictures for you all other than this poor quality one I took with my camera phone when I asked him if he would do "the eyebrow." Drake was sweet and said sure I'll do it for you baby. LOL. Posted Image Now for the tidbits on his status with DOOL. LINK ONLY, please! -In my time in line talking to him and listening to Drake talk to others, I got no indication that there is any validity to the recent rumors of him coming back to DOOL... at least not anytime soon. If this is all a game where Drake and DOOL are in cahoots keeping John Black's return hush hush for some big storyline surprise then it's going to be a surprise to me personally when it comes on the air. Drake spoke candidly and frankly about NBC's lack of interest in daytime television and helping DOOL succeed and last beyond March 2009. He talked about NBC taking steps to dismantle the show and spoke of John's death as a way for executives to gauge fans' emotional attachment to the show and talked about how ratings spiked up for his death but went down when people realized he was really dead. He mentioned something about the soap mags reporting something about him coming back in late December/early January but John Black's not in any of those scripts or story plans as far as he knows... he may have even mentioned they have things planned out as far as Feb sweeps, I'm not sure (keep in mind it was hard to eavesdrop perfectly as there was a hockey game going on inside the arena not THAT far away... lol) but the general idea was that if he was involved in this stuff he should know by now. -He talked about a problem in daytime where people are so concerned with attracting certain demographics they bring in these younger characters without an umbrella story where they interact with the older, established characters, but instead just focus on these new characters without giving fans a reason to care about them. He even said at one point that Deidre has been "on pins and needles" wondering what the future holds for Marlena on the show. :( -He mentioned that ABC *AND* CBS have inquired about his status but NBC is still treating him as its property so any opportunities from other soaps will have to wait at least until after his contract expires with DOOL. |

LOL Great stories IMISS...I heard DRake is awesome with his fans. I miss the eye brow face. So cool that he gave you the John Black look. I am so mad at NBC. They are trying to kill DAYs. :( They need to let Drake go and work. I can not believe they are holding him back. The nerve! |

Thanks for posting! Not a Drake fan at all, but if they aren't bringing him back they should let him go fully. It seems like they're just screwing with him, and there's no cause for that. Unless they're worried about him going to another show and causing a ratings increase, in which case they shouldn't have let him go. Again, many thanks! |

Oh I feel the same way Steve. And honestly Drake was probably even more articulate talking about DOOL's problems than my recollection gives him credit for. I was seriously impressed with what he had to say. While obviously the situation with NBC/DOOL isn't exactly pleasant and like I said, he was candid and frank about things, to me, he didn't come across in saying those things as someone bitter or angry at losing a job but someone who cares passionately about the show and the daytime genre the same way all of us fans do. |

Thanks for the report!! Sounds like there's nothing at all to the GH rumor. Seems like the show is really jerking him around. (And probably all the vets in one way or another). If they did this to gauge fan attachment to the show, then I think fans should write in if they want him back! (Otherwise how will the show be able to see what the fans are thinking?) Hopefully they will also take the ratings to heart... but sadly, I doubt they will. |

Thanks for all the info, IMA! I've met Drake before in person, and he was far more gracious than any other 'celebrity' I've met before. It also shocked me how unlike John Black he was! LoL He wasn't serious or intense... just lighthearted and having fun. I'm glad you got to meet him! |

By the way, this event made the local Peoria news. http://www.week.com/news/local/11533071.html I'm just laughing my ass off at the way the news reporter says Drake's last name! "Hoe-guh-stin." |

He wouldn't say anything even if he was coming back. The show kept a tight lid on John's death so, of course, they would on his return. He's coming back. I won't comment on the rest because I know I will be in the minority on some things so I'll just leave it at that. |

LOL. That guy is sort of a tool. I think there is a reason he is a weekend anchor. And can I say just how much this WEEK promo pic sort of makes me giggle? It's just... a really odd graphic to me. The background doesn't match the logo and man that's kind of a lot of chest hair. Posted Image Ellie, I don't know what to tell you about the GH rumor. I hadn't read it (at least the new one) until I got back here to post my recap of things so I couldn't ask Drake about it. I mean GH could be floating these things out there just as their way of communicating to Drake they're interested if they aren't legally able to negotiate with him while he's still under NBC contract. Who knows? |

How did the show keep a tight lid on John's death? John Black's Last Mission was in JUNE and Drake was already talking about leaving the show then. SOW had the "You pout, you're out!" cover with Drake on it and SOD had the article about Drake leaving a month or two prior to the death stuff. There was also all the speculation he was getting fired in the tabloids. The show didn't keep a tight lid on John's death so much as they just lied to fans repeatedly about John Black staying on the show in all of those articles when the show wound up killing him off. But if you have some inside info that backs up your assertion he is coming back, share it with the rest of us. Otherwise, don't mention it. It's just kind of annoying to act like you know without either explaining reasons for why you feel the way you do or divulging the source who has given you this information that you think indicates he is coming back. Also, why bother telling us that you "won't comment on the rest because I know I will be in the minority on some things." That IS commenting on things. Saying nothing would be not commenting. |

It's just how I feel. And, whether I have inside info or not, if I don't have the permission of the person to post it, I don't post it. There are sources out there that don't want their stuff spread around. The show never officially commented on John's death. Corday never said anything but a brief quote on what Marlena was doing. Hogan never said anything. Ed never said anything. Just the actors. Even all the rumors this summer were commented on by actors and spokespersons, No one else. That is what I meant by tight lid. And I stated I didn't want to comment on the rest because I felt like it and I have seen others do the same. What is the big deal? That's kind of nitpicking if you ask me. I have friends on here that may want to know my opinions on things but I may not want to comment so that is what that was for. Sorry. Next time I will do a better job of choosing my words wisely. |

I think it is cruel how they are jerking him around. I mean if you killed off his character... and aren't planning to bring him back LET HIM GO already! As far as gauging fan reactions... for crying out loud... what more do Drake/J&M fans have to do to show that they miss John Black and want him back on the show? Do we have to take out a billloard or something lol :P I find it odd when they say they killed him off to "gauge fan reaction". I mean wouldn't it have made more sense to actually put him on screen during the 5 or 6 months before you killed him off? Then you would know that the John/J&M fans loved John Black... because you know we would have been ACTUALLY watching the SHOW! I swear these sherlocks (tptb) really need to get a clue <_< |

Interesting... could be. I think that rumor really could have been completely fabricated, especially where they quoted Guza. That has to be false - I mean, a head writer wouldn't give a quote like that unless Drake were really hired there, which he doesn't seem to be. |

If he'd been asked to keep a return quiet, he'd be saying things like "keep watching" or "wait and see". He wouldn't deliberately mislead fans telling them he's not in scripts when he is. |

I also believe something isn't right. This one may have been planned. Maybe Drake's been told to clam up completely. The ratings spiked a bit after John's death but are headed back down. That tells me the J/M contingent cursed their TVs and turned the channel. When you're trying to raise the ratings long-term you don't do something idiotic like kill off a long-term character or two (as GH will find out here shortly). Falling ratings are why a NY soap might be willing to suspend disbelief, erase history and ask a certain actress back to reprise her long-time character (I won't spoil it here, but some of you may know who I'm thinking about). |
