That is not correct about the taping schedule. But I think the point is that the show kept a lead character, who had just had a monumental life event happen, off the air during most of November sweeps. Australia did affect this, at least in part, but the show could have planned the trip for a different time, or they could have taken other measures to compensate for this. |

Maybe they wanted to promote the show in Australia for good reasons. Maybe they had a purpose in doing it now. Thaoo is from there so maybe he wanted them to go down at a certain time. Corday went too. Maybe it's the only time he could go. It also may have been their way of getting out of making a comment about John's death and keeping a tighter lid on it. There may be many factors but I also think a major one is the show wanted to keep the mystery element with Marlena. Having her on would pretty much blow any attempt at creating shock when Marlena is revealed to be the women in black/shooter. We saw Marlena grieve and she will continue to. We saw her thinking revenge and we will continue to. I don't think seeing her just for the sake of seeing her this month is needed. They have the story and I think they set it up quite well to reveal her as the shooter and the lady in black because those who aren't message board people will not see it coming. It's more intriguing this way IMO. For me, it's about the story and entertainment. Not who is on when. The ratings would be the same whether she was on this month or not because, even if she were on, nothing would be happening with her. She would just be grieving and talking revenge since the story doesn't kick in until Friday of this week. In today's ratings landscape, it doesn't matter who is on. What matters is what is happening. A show can have the worst balance and be utter crap but if they blow something up or kill someone you better believe the numbers will show some upward movement of some kind. It shouldn't be like that but that is what the whole entertainment industry has become. Quality doesn't matter. Events and entertainment do. |

Several of the actors have mentioned having frequent week-long breaks. They did change their schedule to help reduce the budget, but I'm not exactly sure how it was changed. |

This is what I think it was. That it was about shipping Thaao, Drake and Dee to Oz to be babysat by Ken and make sure negative comments about the show were not made and they were all removed from the hullabaloo back at the set going on while the shows were airing. I also couldn't disagree more with the assertion that Marlena being on wouldn't make any difference in ratings. While I may not be as much of a fan of Marlena as I once was, if it wasn't for the stunt story of SSK with Marlena as a serial killer, I never would have tuned back into DOOL after taking a break from it for a couple years. I'm sure there are people the same way who tuned back in when they heard John Black was getting killed or had been killed. And Marlena being on gives John and Marlena fans upset about John's death a reason to tune in or John and Marlena fans who tuned back in for John's funeral (as many of them must have to get the ratings increase the show got) a reason to stick around. . Her being conspicuously offscreen or a mysterious shooter just for the sake of a whodunnit shocker that apparently will be revealed AFTER SWEEPS or at the end of sweeps was ill-conceived IMO if that was their intention because of the momentum lost from these John and Marlena fans who would have tuned back in for John's funeral. |

Well let's look at it this way: I think the most shows they can tape in a week is six. That would mean they get one week off for every five weeks they tape. |

Exactly. I think it was no coincidence at all that those three (Deidre, Drake and Ken Corday) were out of the country the week John's death aired.
Excellent post. Completely agree. |

A few years ago, I would agree IMA. However, I've noticed a change in the way the ratings are and they seem more event and action driven and less reliant on who is actually on. Back when the SSK story was happening, Marlena being frontburner along with so many beloved vets was a huge contributer to why the story succeeded and the ratings increased but, to me, since 2006, the ratings have shifted more toward things happening as a key component. There have been several times this year that people questioned why the ratings didn't go up when the vets were on. It's weird but it just seems that way now. Of course, if you put the vets like Marlena on and have things actually happen, then yeah I think ratings will perform much better. The point is that wouldn't have happened this month since it's clear the Marlena story doesn't start until this Friday so, if she had been on the past few weeks, we would have seen what we saw the three weeks after John's death, grieving and talking revenge. She should've been on but I see the other side of the issue, which is diluting the story they are getting ready to tell and making things to repetitive in a year where things have already been too repetitive at times. |

Well, as I see it Johnīs dead was a last moment rewrite of already prepared storyline. They just stopped everything else, let the John death/funeral go through and after it returned back to the original outlines which were already prepared well into November. Thatīs why Marlena again appears at the end of this week, as we are going to finally enter into storylines already prepared under direct Ed Scott supervision. And there is another thing people seems to forget and thatīs budget. Unfortunatelly, for every vet heavy day like Johnīs funeral or Shelleīs wedding, there HAS to be much more days where are mostly newbies to balance the budget. Thatīs just the way things are. Btw. I really donīt understand why everyone is so bitter. I think the show is very good right now. And I donīt find these sweeps lackluster at all. We had shooting at the wedding, we had a very juicy love affair, we have a fan favorite return and a promises of a big story for december already showing on screen. |

I agree wholeheartedly, Jane. However, you will find many that don't buy the budget excuse or simply don't care about that as they want to see what they want to see. For some, it always has to be the writer's or producer's fault, something I understand after all these years of bad decision making on their parts. I just feel that sometimes we are too critical or that we take things apart too much, so much show that we don't even enjoy things anymore as we are constantly analyzing or looking for things to pick out that are wrong. I think it's become way too routine to blame the show or blame the writer or whatever when there are many extenuating circumstances involved like NBC, the budget, etc. I think it's almost come to the point where blaming writers and producers is an easy way out or just the cool thing to do. I mean no offense by this. It's just observations that build a bit on what Jane is saying. I find the show very compelling right now and think it's only going to get better. I think Ed has made a huge difference in putting things together into good stories and I feel he is letting Hogan write under his supervision and that has made all the difference IMO. I think by the end of the year, the show will truly be on top of it's game in all aspects. I truly believe that Ed has had us on the road to recovery since his arrival and that we are nearly there. |

I don't blame writers/Corday because it's cool and easy (though that's definitely a plus), but because I blame them for creating the budget problems they now face, and for failing to be creative enough to work around it. They did a shitty job integrating younger characters (Chelsea and Stephanie should've been part of the summertime Dimera storyline, imho, in scenes with vets). They don't use the most expensive people as much as they should, seeing that they have guarantees and get paid anyway. They failed to create characters and find actors compelling enough to rival, say, Hope/Alfonso, so we now have a show with a bunch of really expensive old favorites and relatively-cheap half-assed, underdeveloped young people. NBC didn't do that. The budget didn't do that. TPTB at the show did, imho, and I'ma blame them for it. I can't justify giving them any excuses for constraints they helped create. It'd be like me getting drunk and getting paralyzed in a car wreck then expecting sympathy and extra help because I can't walk. You screw yourself over, it's your own issue to deal with. And they haven't even been creative enough to deal with it well, imho (one solid storyline would be nice). On another note, I had the horrible thought that Andre was the woman in black, not Marlena. That would suck. |

Thank you very much Px. You said all that very well. I am not going to give them any slack either when they (Corday, Wyman, Reilly, Sheffer, etc.) created this mess that the show is in. It started years ago. and just keeps continuing. And Sheffer just does nothing to help it out. I am not going to make excuses for them and give them the benefit of the doubt on budget or anything when they created this mess. This year alone just look at the money they have wasted. They have paid Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn their big money to sit around and do nothing basically. Or even paid them not to even work. For the next two months it seems that is what they are going to do with Drake. Pay him for his contract and not even use him. They bring back people like Bill & Susan Seaforth Hayes who even though they don't have a contract get a big salary for each appearance to sit around and read letters. They pay the contract salary of a 30-plus year veteran like Suzanne Rogers and hardly use her. For the first half of the year they paid the veteran contracts of Peggy McKay and Frank Parker and they hardly appeared. And then they use someone like Sweeney almost every day all year long and pay her well over what she is contracted for and spend more money that way. And she is long time veteran now too. They need to take a page out of GL's book if they are truly having budget problems. Kim Zimmer is their biggest paid star at this point. Ellen Wheeler recently said they were only using her for her guarateed appearances and that was it. They pay her what they have to pay her and they use her for that many appearances on the show and thus they don't spend more and they don't waste either. Most months she has the most appearances on the show but it is never more than 13 or 14 eppys. If Days would just save the money they waste the budget would be no issue for them. And I love what you said about characters and stuff. If Hogan used half the time he uses on these short term characters like Duck, Willow, Artemis, Demarquette, etc. - on establishing the regular characters and building them the show would be a whole lot better. |

Hogan can't be blamed for most of the mess since most of it was there when he arrived. The show's budget was slashed right around his arrival and then interferences, cast cuts, and such became commonplace and helped to put Days in a further mess. Hogan is not perfect but to put him in the same level of blame as Corday, Wyman, JER, etc after him only being here one year is just something I don't think one can do. |

Isn't Ed's job to simply make the shots look good? I thought that was why he was hired as lighting director or some such. Actually, I think Days is doomed. The so-called juicy love story is nauseating instead of tender and sweet. You do not break up a long term, near super couple who have a child together to supplant a hereto-unknown character as the despised interloper. I hate/loathe/despise this story of EJami. Obviously, whether others want to admit it or not, so do a great many others. Didn't Drake just say that Days is being killed? I totally agree. It's being killed. |

Ed Scott is a second most important head of the show after Corday, not a lighting director. He replaced Steve Wyman who replaced Tom Langan. While Corday is just an owner and name in the credits, itīs always his CoEP who really controls the show on daily basis and he and HW usually works on the story outlines together, thatīs IMO the reason why Steve Wyman was eventually fired, there had to be a huge creative difference between him and Sheffer and either Corday or Sony decided Sheffer is more worthy. And Ed Scott was an EP of Y/R for almost twenty years. I seriously doubt he was brought to DAYS just to improve its visual appeal and daily production. He is a big gun, probably the biggest Sony could get to save the show and turn it around. So, from December on I have no doubt itīs him and Sheffer who are controlling the show. As for the stories you hate, I find it ironic now suddenly Shelle are the supercouple who everybody loves and wants together while not so long ago majority of longterm viewers had been naming them as the main reason why the show is failing and wanted them off the show immediatelly. And the same can be said for Lumi. There was a lot of post about Lumi losing their appeal after admitting their love for each other and their love scenes being fake and forced. Now suddenly they are a supercouple and untouchable too? Itīs no wonder all DAYS writers love to write for teens and newbies because it seems they are the only one who actually can have any story without their fans being angry and trying to boycott the show. This is a soap, not a fairytale. If we are not able accept even a stupid love affair even if it makes an interesting twist and the couple is clearly already at the end of its way, itīs probably really time to turn the lights off and say goodbay because even the best writer in the world doesnīt have a chance to make a difference. Already almost mythical Sheri Anderson included. ;) |

Jane, I believe Jean was speaking of Lumi as the near supercouple who have a child together and was speaking of EJ as the interloper... I don't think any EJami fans are in the dark that some people REALLY hate EJami. Trust me. We have people to remind us. Every day. Personally though I wonder if other folks realize that there are just as many people who would laugh... hard... at the assertion that Lumi is a near supercouple, whether they like EJami or not, and that is just one of many reasons why this triangle is fucked. |

Thanks, IMA. I am a LUMI fan and think the demise of Days is due to EJami. The ratings really prove it. LOL at the Shelle remark. There simply is no Shelle and hasn't been since the original actors departed. This is truly a forced farce, however I don't hate them or loathe Shawn. Frankly, Shawn is written to be pathetic. He should be, as supercouple Bo and Hope's son, a really great guy with the best of every attribute. Also, look at how they wrote Mike Horton's son. What lunacy. The only sweet love story was ruined by putting Jett inbetween Nick and Chelsea. See what I mean. If I sound angry, it is because I am. The show is in hands of those who care nothing about pleasing the fans or writing and using the characters in appropriate ways. |

Correct me if I am wrong but weren't you an EJAMI advocate? I remember you commenting on how sophisticated EJ was and how glamorous life would him would be and how Lucas and Sami were like trailer trash or something like that. I might be wrong but I remember you at the very least not liking Lucas. Oh, and Jane, I agree with your post. I have just grown to accept the fact that some are just never going to be happy no matter what the show gives them. It's been like that since the late 90's and it isn't going to change. It just gets worse by the day. |

Boy oh boy, are you ever confused. I was a Lumi fan and could hardly wait for Lucas and Sami to be married and have a little girl. That was my dream and what would cement them as a supercouple. I even had them in my signature as Salem's next supercouple. Gads, what blasphemy.grrrrrrrrrrrr on you PR. Regarding your severely misquoted remarks, the closest I ever said to anything like that was the EJ was too sophistocated to be serious about Sami who was like an Irish washerwoman by comparison. A much nicer comment LOL. In other words, they are so mismatched it's pitiful. The proper English man with an expensive education, upbringing, even a reknown winner of racing cars in Europe and a ladies man interested in the pest of Salem rotfl, excuse me, while I have a good old fashioned tummy roar over that brilliant (excuse the sarcasm) idea. I hated the first sight of Sami and EJ when he opened the door and dropped his towel and she was like a silly, mindless, giddy schoolgirl all over him. That was a loser from the beginning even before we saw him as the cold-hearted rake that he is. And the truthful Hogan promised us that he loved Lumi and had a Mr./Mrs. North storyline for them....no wonder I have quit this show. |
