Yes, I am new to the Board but I have been watching this board and the Latham situation at Y&R for a while. I felt I had to register today to tell you what I know/have heard since I know a bit more than is being reported because of a good friend who works in production in Daytime TV. First of all, keep in mind that Latham has been a colossal disappointment in bringing up ratings as she promised, the most glaring was the recent "Out of the Ashes" which cost almost double one week of production yet only increased ratings less than 10% of the projected increase. Yes, viewership was down on the West Coast due to the fires and the wall-to-wall coverage of them but still, it was really bad in the halls of Sony the days the numbers came in.

Second, no one on that set is happy or feels secure. No one. Too many firings, too many new characters and inconsistent if not utterly horrible writing. Lastly, that Nielson survey that was posted here was real, as are the dozen plus petitions on line that are constantly forwarded to CBS/Sony each week. Her days were numbered and this [the strike] is an excuse to get rid of her due to an iron-clad contract negotiated with the help of her good friend (from her ABC days) Barbara Bloom when LML was hired. Don't be suprised if the new new EP is in fact Wendy Riche, who was rumored to be the new EP months ago. And don't be suprised if there are many exits and returns of favorites after Jan. 2008. Finally, Sony execs hate egg on their faces so look for another scapegoat in this and that will be Barbara Bloom, probably in the second quarter of 2008.

I hope that you all don't get your hopes up too high. Again, this is the word on the street, from someone who does have insider info, but because of the strike there are a lot of hurdles to regaining control of the show. I can say that this same source has been accurate about a lot of other big news items this year that I knew of in advance, among them Eileen Davidson and Heather Tom's move to B&B and Kay Alden's hiring at the same show "to keep her on hand, in the Bell family." Jack Smith was made the offer first. Make of that what you will.

Sharongate, bitches!

A lot of us are hoping this is true! Wendy Riche at Y&R = total perfection!

Latham needed to go a long time ago, hopefully this is true and a step in the right direction for the show.

From Michael Logan's column in TVGuide:

Y&R Chief Fired?

Could the writers' strike be good for The Young and the Restless? Word is,
exec producer/headwriter Lynn Marie Latham-who has nearly ruined the once-glorious soap-will not return no matter when and how the walkout ends. When contacted, a rep for the CBS-Sony show hemmed and hawed but did not deny Latham's ousting or reports that Sony programming VIP Steve Kent has now taken command. He's not just some suit. Kent was supervising producer of Santa Barbara, arguably the best soap ever.

After all... tomorrow is another day!

If LML was pushed out what would happen to all of the folks DOOL snapped up from YandR. Would they ditch DOOL to go back there?

LOL! No, Y&R would have to find some new people, unless those that went over to Days want to come back.

Depending on who Y&R gets I don't think alot of stuff will change as far as some fans go. Many fans of Y&R have not been happy since Bell retired. They weren't happy under Alden. Then they definitely weren't happy under Smith. And then they haven't been happy under Latham - even blaming Latham for things like the camera focusing in on the flowers and stuff when that was something Bell's son and Barbara Bloom stopped and not Latham. Since Latham has been there some of the same ones who complained under Alden & Smith realized they weren't so bad. LOL

I loved Bell too and it will be hard for anyone to ever live up to his long tenure - longest in daytime.

I just hope Y&R will get a writer than write Y&R close to Bell because if they don't it will not be the same. And Bloom and Bell's son are going to have to put some of those old things back to help viewers who miss that adjust too.

I actually liked a lot of what Latham did. I really liked that she kept the focus of the show where it should have been. I hated that Smith changed the focus and esp. neglected Victor and others. That is the reason Braedan hated Smith and fought to get rid of him. But some of the other vets besides him complained too.

With the trend in daytime to forget the older vets even on shows like ATWT, my biggest fear is that Y&R will get a writer who goes along with that trend and we will never see some of our faves again.

I liked Latham at first. The changes she made right off the bat were good. Some cosmetic stuff. People actually working in the halls of Jabot and Newman. Once Alden and Smith were gone and she started chopping away at the writing staff things started going south for me.
I compare that to GL. John Conboy with Millee Taggart and Carolyn Culliton were great. Then Taggart and Culliton were gone and Ellen Weston was solo HW.There was a blurb in the magazines that she was tinkering with the plots and changing their direction and things went south for GL.

Taggart and Culliton.that is who Y&R should hire!
