Gloria Gets Creamed

For weeks, Gloria has been trying to prevent a suspicious Jeff from finding out that she is behind Jabot's contaminated moisturizer scandal. "It's been this game of cat and mouse ever since they met," sighs Judith Chapman (Gloria). "She's trying to be clever and stay one step ahead of him, but after all that effort, it doesn't seem to work."

That's because this week, Jeff shows Glo the back of his hand, which is sporting a nasty burn. How did it happen? Jeff explains that he applied some of the moisturizer from a jar sent to him by his brother, William, before he died, which is obviously tainted. "There was also a letter in the box that said, 'Don't let her get away with it,' " points out Ted Shackelford (Jeff). "So, Jeff accuses Gloria of being the one who tampered with the cream."

Naturally, Gloria feigns innocence. "She asks why he's so sure that this note is about her," previews Chapman. "It didn't specifically name her. She then says that William could have meant someone else--like Jill."

The next day, while Gloria is in a meeting with Katherine and Jill about the launch of the Fresh Face campaign, Jeff suddenly shows up. "Gloria is really rattled," chuckles Chapman. "She has no idea why he's there."

Shackelford explains. "Jeff says he has a business proposal for Katherine, so she agrees to hear him out. Just as he's going into the meeting with her and Jill, Jeff whispers into Gloria's ear, so no one else can hear, 'I'm going to tell them everything.' "

Gloria panics and bolts from the premises. "She is not a huge drinker, but she makes a beeline for the bar at the Athletic club," laughs Chapman. "She's never done that in her worst depression, so for her to do that now, you can say she's a little stressed. But Jeff later finds her with a martini and says he didn't turn her in."

Gloria is even more stunned by what Jeff says next. "He makes his own proposal," smiles Shackelford. "She can get him off her back by doing one thing--marrying him."

Glo's reaction? "She's like, 'Yuck!' " laughs Chapman. "She's appalled that he would even suggest that. She tells him, 'I only marry for love and I don't love you.' "

Jeff is unswayed by her indifference. "This is the first overt move that we've seen him make toward her money," says Shackelford. "I mean, it's a lot of da** money. Jeffrey suggests, 'You can build a big house and we can live in separate wings and you can mail my allowance.' "

Gloria announces that she needs time to consider the offer. Winks Chapman, "She's stalling as long as possible so she can figure out what to do."

Then Gloria informs Kevin of her latest quandary. "Of course, she doesn't trust Jeff to keep his end of the bargain," huffs Chapman. "She thinks if she says, 'I do,' he'll tell the cops, 'She did it,' and then get all her money when she goes to jail."

Gloria admits to her son that she does not see any way to protect herself other than tying the knot with Jeff. But when she meets with her blackmailer again, Gloria has an interesting proposition of her own. "It's something Jeff didn't expect," teases Shackelford. "He thinks he's in control, but that could all change."

Bedroom Politics

After learning at the Senate hearing that Jack tricked John into changing his will in order to write out Gloria, a shocked Sharon has a difficult time dealing with the fact that her husband lied to her--again. When Mrs. Abbott admits to Victor that she's not sure she wants to go home to Jack, Victor offers to let Sharon stay in her and Nick's former home on the ranch for the night and she accepts. "Sharon has tried to be supportive of Jack throughout everything, but it's been getting harder and harder for her," admits Peter Bergman (Jack). "He's been involved in so many scandals in such a short amount of time: [secretly owning] Jabot, Clear Springs, the Ji Min investigation and now this. Plus, she's had to endure being in the public eye this whole time. It's amazing that she's stood by him for as long as she has."

Sharon calls Jack to let him know she's spending the night elsewhere. But while Jack's home alone, John's ghost pays him a visit, and Jack vows to him that he's going to bring Sharon home. Unbeknownst to her, he even stops by the ranch, but ends up honoring her request to let her be. Later, when Sharon finally returns, Jack admits that he went to see her. Sharon reveals that she was with Brad. When Jack asks if she slept with Carlton, she insists that she came home alone. She then blows up at Jack for deceiving her. "She has every right to be angry," nods Bergman. "Still, he's hoping that he can regain her trust and they can work through things. He loves her."

Jack tries to take a step toward redemption by resigning from the Senate. However, Sharon later confides to Nick that she's not sure she can forgive Jack. "Things seem to be spiraling out of control for Jack," observes Bergman. "We'll see if he hits bottom or manages to come out of this."

Here's the sidebar from the article:

Welcome Back, Ted!

First, Ted Shackelford played by-the-book DA William Bardwell, who died after a stroke. Now, he's back as Will's ne'er-do-well twin, Jeff.

What was your reaction when you heard that William was going to die? "It was very strange. I've never encountered anything like that. Ever. I really enjoyed working on the show and wanted to stay. Then Lynn [Marie Latham, Y&R's executive producer and head writer] said, 'We'll figure it out,' so I had to trust her. Actors like to think they're in control, but it doesn't quite work out that way. The gaffer has more control [laughs]."

Are you enjoying the new role? "Oh, yeah, it's a hoot. I can't figure out who this guy is yet, but I don't trust him. He's like a snake, but there's a saying in the theater that the snake gets all of the lines, so it's a lot of fun, especially with Judith."

So you're glad to be working with her again? "I am so lucky. She is very professional to begin with, but we like to mess about and she's always telling me not to make her laugh. But when it comes down to business, we do it. She's wonderful."

Jeff is after Gloria's money. Is he really a bad guy or just misunderstood? "If he's bad, how bad can he be because with Gloria he's dealing with the Grand Poobah when it comes to that."

Do you want your characters to get married? "Gloria's history with men hasn't been so good. They die when they marry her and I don't want to do that again. I've been there, done that and got the T-shirt."
