'As the World Turns' celebrates Christmas with the 'Nutcracker'
By CAROLYN HINSEY

"As the World Turns" treats viewers to a special episode on Friday, inspired by "The Nutcracker."

"This Christmas show is a Victorian soap opera reflecting the characters' inner lives, dreams and perceptions," says Cady McClain, whose Rosanna character fi gures in the tale. "The sets, lighting, costumes, hair and makeup couldn't be more beautiful. It's a lot of fun."

The premise is that Faith and Natalie go to see "The Nutcracker" with Lucinda and then see a doll-house in a window in Old Town. They make a wish that the magic was real - and then all the dolls in the window come to life.

"Rosanna is married to Paul and sick in bed," says McClain. "Herrival, Meg, has become nurse Margaret and is taking care of her. Much like today, Paul [dressed as master of the house] and Margaret can't keep their hands off each other, which Rosanna does not appreciate. Luckily, Craig arrives and makes Meg an offer she can't refuse. Meg and Craig gallop away, which makes Rosanna very happy. If only it was that easy for her in the present!"

Elsewhere in Oakdale, the Lily/Dusty/Holden triangle gets a fresh twist with Dusty as a wealthy suitor and Holden as aservant battling for Lily's attention. Gwen is a celebrity, with Will, Aaron and Alison swirling around her. Sage, JJ and Parker go shopping in Old Town, which prompts a story about Carly, Jack, Brad and Katie."

Brad is a minister," says a chuckling Austin Peck, who plays the comical ladies' man. "He is there for all the people who need his help." That includes Katie, who enjoys a wonderful first meeting with Jack (her present-day ex-husband) until Carly shows up and ruins it. "Brad gets to tell everyone what to do, and he has God to back him up, so they have to do it," says Peck, laughing.

At the end, as Sage, Faith and Natalie look at the dollhouse, the entire cast (in period attire) sings a carol. The Carly doll then winks at Sage, leaving her thrilled at the magic of the Christmas season.

"The heightened language, costumes and manners took a little getting used to, but once we all got into it, everyone found something fun in what they were given to do," says McClain. "I was one of the lucky ones and didn't have to wear a corset, but I heard some serious moaning from the ladies who did. Who was it that said, 'Ah, the good old days - they were terrible.' For the girls, that is!"

This is so stupid and unnecessary. All the fans want is a nice, NORMAL family Christmas episode.
