I found this old clip from 1984 of Deidre Hall after Roman's death. Hall was nominated I believe for Lead Actress for this very material and LOST. To this day I will remain dumbfounded how the Emmy's fucked that one up.

This is IMO her absolute best work of her career. Some of the best acting every in daytime I think.

Here is the clip:

I loved how Deidre constantly was looking around the room, consumed probably by all the moments she had with Roman in that house and realizing they were gone forever. Man, she really killed me in this scene.

Here is the list of women nominated that year:

Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama Series

* Susan Lucci (All My Children)
* Gillian Spencer (All My Children)
* Deidre Hall (Days of Our Lives)
* Kim Zimmer (Guiding Light)
* Robin Strasser (One Life to Live)

How the FUCK does this women not have an Emmy by now. Not only that, but she has garned only 3 FREAKING nominations EVER!

--

I hope Deidre gets a Lead Actress nomination for John's Death, which was also some of the best work of her career.

This is one of those "so realistic you feel guilty for even watching it" scenes. It's as if you're watching a REAL person mourn the death of a REAL loved one, and you should look away out of respect or something.

Didn't the famous 'slut of Springfield' scene air in 84? That is probably what Zimmer won for.

Yeah, I don't get it either.

Deidre's been nominated three times and put her name up for pre-nomination I belive only 5 times (Possession and Serial Killer being the last two, she didn't get nominated). She never puts her name on the ballots anymore. So yeah, she doesn't exactly scream "nominate me", but if there's a fantastic couple of episodes where she's center and shines, Corday can put her name on there can't he?

And I know Kim and Deidre are friends or whatever, but KZ could kind of take a cue from DH in this area. But then I wasen't impressed with the 'Slut of Springfield' scene.

This is why she didn't win

Deidre's perf IMO was more subtle and more emotional.

Zimmer was good, but Hall had SO many more outstanding scenes, including the one with Peter Reckell.

And Mitch, that's why she didn't win, that's why she never wins. She won't do a screaming match just to win the Emmy. She chooses to do subtle and raw instead.

In the topic with the Slut of Springfield video, another poster said that KZ didn't win for this real. I do recall in years past that everyone thinks she won for that but in reality that was about the only speaking part Reva had in that episode, it was a party and she didn't have many speaking parts, almost like background in some scenes.

I know a lot of Emmy judges say they don't like to watch a lot of crying scenes, because they don't have any emotional connections to them. Zimmer, Flannery, and Slezak have a history of choosing good stand-alone tapes, where voters don't have to know the whole back story to get invested.

Both Michael Logan and Michael Bruno say it's not crying that gets you an Emmy, it's holding back tears and giving a fierce performance that wins you one. All I see in this Marlena clip is crying, no real dialogue, and a story where you'd have to know the whole meaning behind Marlena and Roman's romance to get invested. I can see why voters didn't vote for her, I'm not saying it's a bad performance though.

I don't even think this is Dee's best work, I think the scenes where her son with Don died were better, though that had a bit of over-crying too.

That's true, Kim didn't submit that clip for her Emmy reel in 1984, it was reported in SOD I believe. She had a tour-de-force year in 1984 and could've won for just about anything. It was her first win to date of 4 Emmy's, so obviously she was doing something to the judges liking.

I agree with that.

I disagree that crying doesn't get you an Emmy. It has for some and not for others. I have seen some get Emmy's for fierce performances and some for breaking down. It all depends. To me, this is not Dee's best work in this story. This is good (and reminds me of the breakdown scene she had this past October after John "died." Same set up with her looking around and walking, sitting down, breaking down, etc). but the scene were she totally blew it out of the ballpark was the scene where Bo tells Marlena he left Roman's body. Marlena lashes out at him and that scene gave me chills.

Dee has so much great work. Marlena's rape. DJ's death, the scene I mentioned and this breakdown scene, and she had so much stuff during the pit and affair storylines I can't even list them all. Dee is overdue for recognition and it's a crime she has nothing to show for her fine work, especially considering how classy she is.

As far as Kim goes, she had alot of great work that year and I can't argue against her winning that year. I still think Dee should've won for the scene where she lashed out at Bo but Kim's win was deserved so it's something I can at least live with. I also don't believe the scene mentioned here was on Kim's reel. I, too, remember something in SOD about it. There really wasn't a whole lot with her in that episode. Like someone said, she was in the background for most of that episode.

These two clips are awesome, too. This is Marlena's therapy session after Sam was murdered. Deidre Hall is AWESOME in these scenes! She must have been so emotionally drained afterward.
