NBC Orders Up 'Kath and Kim'
A.J. Frutkin

FEBRUARY 06, 2008 -
Making good on its threat to reduce the number of pilots its produces, NBC has given a direct-to-series pick up to the mother-daughter sitcom Kath and Kim. The network has ordered six episodes of the series, which is based on an Australian format, and produced by NBC programming chief Ben Silverman's former company Reveille.

The project originally was greenlit back in fourth quarter 2006, under the network's then programmer Kevin Reilly. But casting problems stalled production of the pilot. The network recently announced it had completed casting of the two principals, with Molly Shannon playing the mom, and Selma Blair as the daughter.

"This hilarious new series exemplifies how we are changing the pilot process by ordering shows that we believe in and green-lighting them straight to series," said Silverman, in a statement released by NBC today. "We are confident that this proven international hit will effortlessly translate to American audiences and we couldn't be more excited that Molly and Selma will be playing the leads."

Of course, proven international hits don't always migrate successfully to U.S. soil, as Silverman found out in 2003, when the Reveille-produced NBC sitcom Coupling--based on the hit British series--tanked.

Michelle Nader (King of Queens) will write and executive produce Kath and Kim. The show's Australian creators and stars, Gina Riley and Jane Turner, will also be credited as executive producers, as will its original executive producer Rick McKenna. Paul Feig will direct the first episode, and exec produce too. Universal Media Studios will produce the series with Reveille.
