Parents’ council calls for killer show’s boycott

Should Dexter, the gory Showtime series about a murderer/cop, be airing on mainstream networks CTV and CBS? The Parents Television Council says no bloody way.

An edited version of Dexter debuted last Sunday on the stations, but the organization says it’s still too violent and is asking advertisers to boycott the show.

According to a report on adweek.com, the PTC says CBS didn’t fulfill its promise to tone down the carnage.

"Despite countless public calls for restraint and corporate responsibility, CBS broke its own promise to the public that it would employ careful editing and accurate ratings guidelines," PTC president Tim Winter says in a statement.

"Depictions of violence were barely altered from the Showtime network original format.”

CBS had no comment, but had previously issued a statement saying, "As always, with broadcasts containing mature content, television audiences will be well informed with an appropriate V-chip rating and parental advisories in advance and during the broadcast."

The advertisers on last Sunday’s episode included Burger King, Macy's, Capitol One and several movie studios.

Some people are just so effing lame. I envy the UK where they can really do whatever the hell they want on primetime TV. And honestly, Dexter really isn't anymore gorier than the CSI's, so I don't see what the big to-do is all about.

Amen to that

I am a huge CBS fan as you all know and I have seen much worse on Criminal Minds & CSI, but CM makes CSI look like PBS shows. haha

Criminal Minds Crimes

A satanist kills women and eats them, and served them in his special chili, while the volunteers looking for her unknowingly ate her

A set of brothers who killed moms and dads while the children watch, then they kill the kids.

fingers being clipped off with wire cutters.

A woman's head being bashed into a wall numerous times.

Countless shootings in which the camera never pans away.

A kid beating another kid with a baseball bat.

A woman being thrown into a vat of broken glass and having to walk out of it to escape.

A woman shooting an arrow through a man

A woman having her fingernails litterally pulled with pliers.

An episode whice ran a bumper that it was intended for mature audiences only about a serial sadistic rapist who glued the womens eyes open so they could see him raping them.

A man kidnaps three teenaged girls and locks them in a cellar and makes them decide which one must die. The other girls beat her in the head with a hammer.

Numerous stabbings, suicides, gunshots, throats slashed, asphyexation, serial arsonists, rapists, pedophiles, and all sorts of other unsavory characters and all of it just as graphic as Dexter.

I don't get why they are so against Dexter, when CM is worse.

not much was removed from the Showcase versions of the killings cause not much needed to be cut out. Dexter's killings are generally not gory, it uses cut scenes to other things while he's sawing them up.

Bigger question ... why are your impressionable children still awake at 10pm on a school night?!

Wow... and I thought these things only happen in Croatia... (well not really with TV series, but with Big Brother, but still... lol)

It's so crazy... it's like Dexter is the only thing to watch... Don't these parents have any control over what their kids watch?! Geez...

This is ridiculous. I guess it is kind of to be expected though. Between this and the comment from Adam on BB, I guess CBS is having one hell of a week.
