Y&R's Jack And Sharon Come Up With A Spirited Plan To Get Rid Of Gloria!

In his quest to run Gloria out of the Abbott mansion, Jack is trying to make his former stepmom believe that his father's ghost is haunting the place. To that end, Jack and Sharon pretend to give up and move out, then convince Glo's opportunistic hubby, Jeffrey, to help. "It's like making a deal with the devil," points out Jack's portrayer, Peter Bergman.

This week, Jack's scary scheme is put into action when Gloria finds one of John's favorite books on her nightstand (planted by Jeff). "Gloria freaks out when she sees the book and uses that as another excuse not to sleep with Jeffrey," explains Judith Chapman (Gloria). Jeff feigns anger about being turned down yet again, but he's actually elated that the book has set her off. Later, Jeff calls Jack with the news that everything is going as planned.

However, Michael is suspicious after he learns that Jack and Sharon have given up the mansion. "Michael thinks that there is something weird going on," says Bergman. "So Jack knows that he and Jeffrey have to be really careful."

And how. Gloria starts to suspect that Jeff is behind the appearance of John's book. After planning a family dinner with her kids, Glo tells Kevin and Jana about the book. "They try to come up with reasonable explanations," says Chapman. "Then Jana begins to believe that John's ghost is really behind it, which really rattles Gloria."

Meanwhile, Jack decides that it's time to step up his plan, so Sharon comes up with an idea to truly spook Gloria: Find someone to play John's ghost. "It's not that Sharon has been brought over to the dark side, it's just that she now understands who they're dealing with," notes Bergman. "You've got to fight fire with fire, and Sharon gets that now. Does she like this? Probably not, but she wants to keep her house."

The Abbotts determine that the best way to carry out such a ruse would be to hire a professional actor, so they sort through head shots. "After searching for a while, Jack doesn't think it's going to work, but Sharon suddenly says, 'Wait a minute... what about this guy?' " says Bergman. "There's a photo of this man, Alistair Wallingford, who has glasses on in the picture, but there's no doubt about it that he's got John Abbott's eyes. So they start calling around trying to find him."

During Gloria's dinner, Michael and Lauren want to find out what's really going on between his mom and Jeff. Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin stage a spat so that she can spend the night at the mansion to spy on her in-laws. "Gloria gives her okay, but Jeff is quite frustrated that Lauren is staying with them," notes Chapman. "He thinks it is another excuse for Gloria to avoid sleeping with him."

As Jeff plots his next move to gaslight his wife, Jack and Sharon track down Alistair, who accepts the job. He's near Genoa City doing dinner theater, so Jack sends a car to bring him to the warehouse so they can meet.

While they're waiting for Alistair, Jeff tips off Jack that Lauren is watching his every move, so Jack sets up a meeting with Lauren about advertising in Restless Style to keep her occupied. Jeff then lures Gloria into what looks like another seduction. "Instead, Gloria finds John's jacket that you-know-who put there and she just panics," sighs Chapman.

Meanwhile, Alistair shows up. "What Jack and Sharon get is this crazy, drunken Scotsman with a thick accent," grins Bergman. "He's got this old hat on and a goatee. At best, he looks like John Abbott on skid row. Jack thinks this has disaster written all over it and he just wants to forget it."

But Sharon thinks that Alistair could still work out, so she explains their plan. "They're up front about the scheme to scare Gloria," Bergman points out. "They tell him that they know he must have certain standards, but Alistair just says, 'For the right price, they can be pretty low.' So, against his better judgment, Jack decides to work with this guy."

The next step is to see if Alistair can look enough like John to fool Gloria. Jack and Sharon give the old man a suit and ask him to change in the other room. When Alistair emerges clean-shaven, Jack and Sharon are stunned. "It hits Jack upside the head like a brick when Alistair comes out," says Bergman. "He looks just like John."

And the timing couldn't be better. Since finding her late husband's jacket, Gloria wonders if she truly is going crazy or if John is haunting her. Then Glo looks out the window and sees John standing outside! "It shocks her to the core," shudders Chapman.

But don't expect this ghost story to go off without a hitch. Winks Bergman, "Jack thinks it's a perfect plan but, bit by bit, it falls apart."
