I'm like the other person that posted on here somewhere. Why would Tom want to go back to Y&R when he said he never got the show when he was there before. What is going to change now unless he does feel that with Hogan there the show will change direction.
If Tom takes the job there I will be very disappointed in him when he said he didn't understand the show and didn't get it.
Why would you be dissapointed in him for taking a job, if it was offered to him? The man has to work, you know. He has said that he didn't get the show previously. I would think if he had the chance to write for the show again, he would ask for sometime to study the show some more. He'd also be working with a Headwriter that he is friendly with, which i'm sure would aid the process.

And let's not forget Tom's time there was under LML.
Did ANYONE "get" the show back then? Writers, actors, OR fans?

I think Tom is a very witty and talented guy. I really hope he gets hired soon. AS for HS... there is no love loss there for me...I feel bad for those fans Of Y&R. HE did us DAYS fans dirty imo. I can see this guy trying to make a really shitty mess of things over at Y&R. I also get offended by HS actions in giving dicks back to men...he does it by humiliating and degrading the female characters...makes me sick. He has no idea how to write a strong man. He just turns them into monster bullies who scream and yell alot. <_<

I won't be disappointed in him, but I think it lacks sense. Then again, like goldy said, he has to work somewhere, might as well be Y&R.
Like I said, I want to see him on primetime, baby.

To me it doesn't matter whether it was under Lynn Latham or not. Lynn did make the show more plot driven but the show was basically still operating under the same premise and same format. It was about the same characters and all.
To me it is just going against what he said, and as the other person said it would make me think differently toward him.
Yes he has to work somewhere, but if you don't get a show how can you effectively work and write for it. For someone who feels the way he does about soaps, why contribute to the problems that are plaguing soaps right now - which is writers that don't get the true meaning of the show they work on.
that is the biggest problem with many of the writers right is that they don't understand what the show is truly about that they are writing for.
Why do you think Dena Higley has turned Days around? Because she gets what Days is and although it is not perfect it is worlds ahead of what it was under both JER and Hogan.
Why do you think OLTL is so great under Ron Carvilati - because he gets what OLTL is about and has restored that to OLTL. He knows the show and he gets it.
I guess if you buy into Tom's reasoning of being lenient and overlook certain things then that's fine but I don't. Why should we have to lower our standards and overlook the fact that writers need time or whatever. I don't buy that. That is what is destroying the daytime soap opera genre right now.

I found the other post. It is by Chris. I will quote it here. I think he makes good points.

I posted so much in the previous thread and I don't want to repost all of that. I'll start at the end of the previous thread. Someone suggested that Tom Casiello be brought onto the show. Since he worked with Hogan, I suspect this could happen. If it does, I'll lose whatever respect I had for Tom. He's already admitted that he didn't understand the show when he wrote previously. Returning now that a man he enjoys and respects is writing would make him a hack, IMO. Hacks, like Hogan, LML, etc. go from show to show looking trying to turn it into their show with a complete disregard for the history, style and tone already in place.
I think a lot of the love for TC comes from his blog, which is rare for writers. But let's be honest--all of his writing stints have been part of unsuccessful teams. That's not counting ATWT which he left before it started to go bad. Besides that he has Hogan's awful stint at DAYS and Dena Higley at OLTL. Those two stints were so damaging that it's hard to imagine he's this great writer in the wings.
Then you have on his blog recently where he's basically saying we should lower out standards and wait until the HW "gets" the show. Look how long and how many viewers lost it took until Hogan *got* DAYS. It's like when Hogan made us watch Peyton List and others learn how to act. When you're paid millions, as headwriters are, you should get it from day one. Otherwise the show needs to look elsewhere. When soaps had viewers they were always quick to replace a HW who wasn't working. They wanted to save their soaps. Now? It's all about lowering standards, waiting and giving them chance after chance which I've never seen work.
Another internet blogger I WOULD like see return to Y&R is Sara Bibel. She was actually part of a GREAT writing team and knows the history of this show. From her blog posts you can also see a passion for AMC, which I think would be a great fit for her (with a strong creative team). Her posts reflect what fans truly want and what the genre needs. I'm not saying make her HW, but she'd certainly be a bigger step in the right direction than Tom Casiello.
In general I'm just upset that they're going so far from the Y&R people. I figured, MAB is a Bell so surely she'll bring back some Bell writers, right? Nope. Only the ones LML didn't fire. It's sad that Hogan's probably going to be the one firing these people, but only to bring on MORE newbies--his friends from DAYS and ATWT. What did those Y&R writers do? Their loyalty throughout the years showed a great passion for the show. Plus they won an Emmy for Writing just as they were fired. None of them are considered good enough to return? The only hope is Trent Jones who worked with Hogan at ATWT.

I agree with a lot of what Chris had to say - except for one thing.
I went back and re-read the blog, and I don't think he was telling ANYONE to lower their standards - just enjoy good scenes when they cross our paths. There is a tendency to build this mob mentality on the Internet when it comes to the shows, and drown in pessimism and cynicism. In fact, many of Tom's blogs are all about creative visions, and getting back to the daytime he grew up with, coming from an honest place, about family and friends and romance and relationships. I honestly don't think he was trying to tell anybody to lower their standards.

I think it all boils down to a matter of interpretation. It is strange that many (not just me) interpreted what he said to mean just that including the poster who started this original thread.
And this is not directed to you BriMike but to the general concensus around here as of late.
As to Tom, I like the man but I don't worship him. He writes some good scenes and stuff and is very personable. But he is not God's gift to writers.
I guess I need to add him to the list though of those who are worshipped here and are off limits for expressing any negative.
Let's see:
James Scott Hogan Sheffer Thaao Penghlis EJami and now Tom Casiello
Did I miss anyone. I want to keep a list so that when I have an opinion about them from now on I will keep it to myself.

Aw, Steve... I didn't mean it like that. You can totally say whatever you want about him. I was just engaging in some back-and-forth fun debate. I wasn't trying to step on anyone's toes. Feel free to have any opinion you want about Casiello. It's all good. (From my end) No need to add his name to any list.
ETA: And honestly? NOBODY should be worshiped. Actors have good days and bad days. Writers have good stories and bad stories. Soaps have good runs and bad runs. As far as I'm concerned, "worshipping" is one of the worst things a soap fan can do because it puts everything on a pedestal they can never live up to.

Let's see: James Scott Hogan Sheffer Thaao Penghlis EJami and now Tom Casiello Did I miss anyone.
:wave:ETA: And honestly? NOBODY should be worshiped. Actors have good days and bad days. Writers have good stories and bad stories. Soaps have good runs and bad runs. As far as I'm concerned, "worshipping" is one of the worst things a soap fan can do because it puts everything on a pedestal they can never live up to.
OH Bri I know you didn't. That is why I said that it was not directed toward you.
The last few weeks and months have just soured me. It used to be just a few people here and there. The first inklings I ever got hit with was with the Zendell group. I found it so weird the way they are worshipped and people attack you over the least little thing you say in a negative way about them.
Then it branched to Kimberlin Brown who was given that type of worship on the Internet.
And now here at DR it has branched out into those others. I mean just in the last week you have people calling for Nelson Branco's blood because he expressed a negative opinion about Thaao Penghlis.
And people losing their memberships on this very board because they get so caught up in fights with others over actors and actresses and characters who when truth came down to it don't know who they are from someone else in the world.
I mean these people are not Gods. And why should they be treated like them. Everything they do is open to interpretation by others - both good and bad. It just gets sickening that some people take it so seriously that any bad comment about someone is the trigger for WWIII.
What is so funny but more so it is just plain out hypocritical is that these same people who don't want you to say anything negative about their fave will turn around and spout out some of the most negative comments about others. They don't want negative opinions sent toward their fave but have no problem dishing them out to someone else. And they will say that it is their right to be able to do so.

That is driving me crazy also and even moreso lately.......
The DR was created so people could express themselves freely in a place that wasn't as restrictive as some other boards out there, and sadly that privilege has been abused time and time again mostly due to the rabid fan base wars and/or people going to extremes when they disagree with someone else's opinion.......

I would agree if that were true. Even though Y&R isn't close to perfect, I see people, even on completely frank boards like Television Without Pity praising those moments that DO work. We wouldn't be watching if we didn't want to like the show. Even when LML was writing people would say when there is a good episode or scene or moment. The problem is, a soap opera cannot be sustained on single episodes, scenes or moments. We're asked to invest 5 hours a week in a soap (since they want you to watch commercials) and an enjoyable 1/5 hours isn't cutting it. Since there is more bad than good, you hear about the bad more often.
Getting back to my earlier comments about Tom on Y&R, which I repeated on IntheZone (Ryan and Jen's fierce radio show)....
I enjoy the guys columns, even though I don't always agree. He seems like a nice guy and is probably a good writer, but that doesn't mean he's fit for Y&R. You can't throw any writer on any show and expect it to work. Pat Faulken Smith (was that her name?) was considered a savior for GH, then ruined Ryan's Hope so bad it never recovered. Claire Labine rocked out Where the Heart Is, Love of Life, Ryan's Hope and General Hospital, but admitted she didn't get GL or OLTL. It happens. It doesn't mean you're untalented or anything like that. Tom recongnized and has said that he didn't understand Y&R, the show, not LML. Maybe he can clarify, although I suspect he could backtrack with the chance Hogan will hire him. Anyway, his only reason for returning to a show he doesn't get would be a paycheck and being around a guy he respects and enjoys working with. That's a hack move right there and what is destroying our soaps right now. People don't understand a show, yet they keep their job and simply do their own thing. They turn it into their own show or fail at trying to do what they think the show actually is meant to be like.
I wish one of these new writers would show enough class to bring back some of the people who actually worked on the show. So many of them were fired and we already know how talented they are. Instead of hiring your friends (like Tom) from previous gigs, hire people who know the history of the show and can help you out.
I know if Tom is reading this he probably hates my guts. I'm sorry, but I'm just giving my honest opinion. I don't mean to sound overtly harsh, but some things need to be said. I'd rather everyone say what they feel so if Tom or Hogan or Maria visit, they see what is truly frustrating fans and consider it.

I don't know why he'd hate you. You didn't say anything bad about him. And besides, there's no reason to think he's even going to Y&R. It didn't sound like he was. It's still based off of an assumption that has no basis other than that they're friends.
And I think your honesty is good. Well-thought-out honesty is never a bad thing.

I found the other post. It is by Chris. I will quote it here. I think he makes good points. - Quote:

You have every right to have your opinion, but you have to understand that people are not always going to agree with you. And if they don't agree, it isn't doesn't mean that your opinion is somehow less valid and you shouldn't express it.

Steve, I'm not sure of other threads, but there was nothing in this thread that should lead you to believe that anyone is off limits to dislike. You have every right to have your opinion, but you have to understand that people are not always going to agree with you. And if they don't agree, it isn't doesn't mean that your opinion is somehow less valid and you shouldn't express it.
I don't expect everyone to share my opinion. As I don't expect them to expect me to share their opinion. Anything is game. I make it a point to never get mad about anything that is said about my faves as I understand not everyone is going to like him or her.
My point was to clearly point out to all that this is a running thing on the DR now. Certain ones are off limits as far as many are concerned and it is not the fact that yes you have the right to express it - it is the fact that you do not want to because you know the problems it is going to cause.
No there are not really any threads that really state here you are not supposed to have an opinon or said that I shouldn't. But after my comments I received 2 PM's berating me for saying the things I did about Tom.
And I know of others who are being harrassed in PM's at various times or on the boards about some of these others. It is out of hand and I used my post to address them all.
As Rhi said the rabid fan base stuff is way too out of hand. And needs to be reeled in for everyone's enjoyment.
The best advice that can be given to any that feel so strongly about certain individuals and couples it to go to some board where you can only post about your love for that individual and only allow others to post about that love too. And if you cannot handle negative thoughts about them without getting so riled up and calling for someone's blood then it is best you stay away from threads where certain things can and will be said.
We want every member to feel like they are welcome here, but that being said if you cannot tolerate the openess of others opinions without lashing out at them then it is really best you not participate. It only causes problems for everyone including the poster who can't handle it.

I am soo behind the times lol, I just read the one from the 17th.
I get the fact that people have a tendency to pick apart a soap and point out the bad things more often then the good. But IMO, on many of the soaps I watch the bad have far out weighed the good the majority of the time. How can you, as a viewer, be expected to "sit back and enjoy the ride" when the ride is boring as hell and not exciting, or even entertaining? More often then not it seems to be the same 'ole merry-go-round day after day.
IMO nothing is going to change in the soap world if they all keep playing musical writers and shuffling writers around from soap to soap. Because, more often then not, they will take something they did at one soap and find a way to incorporate it into the next soap they work on. If a soap never gets a NEW fresh writer that has never worked on daytime, nothing will EVER change! And we will continue to see the bad because the good stuff is few and far between!
;)

i agree with almosyt everything., the only thing i dont agree with is it making hima hack/it being a hack move. i say this because IMHO a hack is someone who ruine sa show. would TC working at Y&R ruin it? I dont think so. I dont think he would do any damage. I think it rpob be much more work and not as fun, but as long as it did no damage not a hack.

I found the other post. It is by Chris. I will quote it here. I think he makes good points. - Quote:

Let's see: James Scott Hogan Sheffer Thaao Penghlis EJami and now Tom Casiello Did I miss anyone.
Well, I promise you, you will never get a nasty PM from me, about something you said lol Just know that I may not always agree with you! lol
NO ONE is off limits here, and everyone has the right to not like someone. Even Tom C :)

Tom C agrees with you. From his latest blog:
- Quote:

I encourage people to post their thoughts, their opinions, their beliefs, no matter how wildly unpopular they may be. I encourage debate, even if it's towards me. My only goal has been, how can I be a better writer? How can I better serve these shows, and better honor their histories AND their multitude of fans who all watch for different reasons? How can I LEARN?
I love this world. I grew up in this world, and I would love nothing more than to see it reach greatness again. And I know I can write a story. I know I'm a good storyteller. But in the land of soaps, we're writing now to try and both live up to a previous legacy, AND create a new legacy. And that doesn't exist in ANY OTHER KIND OF WRITING. This is not a hurdle to overcome in writing novels, or writing screenplays or primetime. We have thirty-plus years of history to either top, or never be worse than. That's an incredible obstacle, and so every time I can talk to you guys, and find ways to overcome it, it's worth it to me.
I knew when I started this blog there would be some kind of backlash. This is America, after all. And it's fine - I don't need defending. In fact, in the last year, I've learned a WHOLE LOT from the people who thoughtfully and eloquently state their opinions against mine, and back them up. And a lot of times? I agree with them in the end. They're right about me. And I keep trying harder. So please - agree. Disagree. It's all good.
