Michael renews his search into his father's past this week, determined not to follow in his deadbeat dad's footsteps. For Christian LeBlanc, it's an eye-opening adventure.

SOW: What prompts the new search?

CLB: Everything that's been going on with Gloria - the weird stuff with her karma, giving her money away, loving Jeffrey, sleeping with Alistair. Gloria keeps coming to Michael and he doesn't know why he keeps saying yes to helping her. Michael has never had a functional parent. Gloria had Michael when she was 15, and he helped raise her. Michael knows little about Lowell, his father, except for vague memories. There are unanswered questions about who his father is. Michael's feeling is "forewarned is forearmed," as far as his own son is concerned. Now that Michael has Fenmore, it's all weighing on his mind. He wonders, "What kind of father am I going to be?"

SOW: Lauren tells Michael she had his grandmother's diary restored. Is he anxious to read it?

CLB: Michael wants to find out about his father; he's a little afraid about what he's going to learn. The knowledge is bound to be painful. This man left Michael when he was a kid He left both him and his mother.

SOW: Michael ultimately reads the diary. What does he discover?

CLB: It ain't Father Knows Best. There are hints about his grandmother and the pain Michael's father caused her when he met "this skinny girl from Detroit." Gloria's name is not even mentioned. She writes about things Lowell did related to drug use and being a dropout and a hippie. "It's breaking my heart," is one of his grandmother's direct quotes.

SOW: Do these revelations break Michael's heart, too?

CLB: To see this confirmed and written...Michael is devastated. Yet, he has to follow through. He wants to know more. This diary sets a lot of things into motion.

SOW: Does Michael fear he might desert his own family one day?

CLB: He has already done it once. Michael is a coward. He left his mother and his brother to be physically beaten. He ran away and stayed away. He let Gloria and Kevin live in poverty. He obviously loved his mother and brother, but he ran off like his father. Those things are not just genetic. There is the emotional inheritance of that.

SOW: What's Michael's next step?

CLB: He goes to Gloria for confirmation of the things he's read. He's tired of the lies. Their relationship is so dysfunctional. He's ready to dive in. He wants her to tell him more about his father.

SOW: What is Michael hoping for?

CLB: He's not naive enough to think there will be closure. He wants to know where his father is. He doesn't know if he's dead. What's going on? What really happened between Gloria and Lowell? He wants to know the bad news so he can't be surprised by anything.
