My memory doesn't serve me very well about specifics. Samantha was jealous of Marlena. She drugged Marlena and put her in a nut house and took over Marlena's identity, IIRC. I'm sure someone will post more info.
Yes, that's right! Found these - here's a short writeup on the sanitarium story, and here's a writeup on when Samantha was killed by Jake Kositchek.

I have no problem with Sam acting as Marlena because that fits with the character. She tried to do it before. As Drew said, if Marlena is nabbed, which seems possible given Stefano will be coming after her pissed off, they have to do it in a way where she comes off strong. Marlena was kidnapped all the time during JER's first stint but she maintained her strength because she was fiesty and fighting him at every turn. They need to tap into that. This can't be like the Marlena of JER's second stint or it won't matter how good the Samantha angle is. It will still suck.

The one thing this does though is give fans something to look forward to. Days needed something exciting and between Stefano's return and now this, I think the excitement quotient has been upped significantly just as the show heads into the Olympics. Yes, Dena could still fuck this up but things have been much better since Rick was promoted and my hope is that they will at least give him a shot eventually. I'm excited though at the potential of all this.

Wow! I have to give it to the writers because they've finally shocked me with something they have planned to write. Will it be a success? I don't know. Dena Higley is still head writer, and while I think that Rick Draughton was brought on as her Co-HW to eventually replace her, if that's not the case, then I don't think this will end well. Dena just can't pen good stories. She doesn't have the right writing team because her team sucks at breaking down her outlines, obviously no one knows what good pacing is.
I agree. That's why I am living in a fantasy world right now. I have no illusions, but it's nice to dream, at least for one day. And they did get my attention, which I didn't think was humanly possible.

This pisses me off.

First of all, Dee *has* played two characters before---she played Hattie in 2004.

Secondly, Andrea Hall-Gengler is easily available...why not bring HER back as Samantha? This is ridiculous and I call foul.

Maybe "Samantha" will turn out to be Kristen Blake with plastic surgery so Andrea can return to her role in the future.

Um, right. For two episodes I think. There was a shot at the end of each show of Marlena in a hospital bed, if I remember correctly, and the rest of the show was Hattie.

She is? Who knows, maybe they explored the idea with her but she wasn't available. Unless you have some inside info. ;)

What's your point? She still played two characters---Marlena and Hattie. You just laid out how it happened.

I love love LOVE Andrea, but she is retired, and she's a teacher now in an entirely different state, I think.

I am just happy to get Sam back because we all know Deidre is fantastic and I am confidant she'll play her well.

^Andrea may not want to return. I believe she is a teacher and enjoys her life. I believe that may have been why she never appeared as Hattie in 2004.

The one thing that does bother me is how this cheapens the whole "Sam is dead instead of Marlena" story. That was one of the most shocking arcs in Days and soap history and now neither of them is dead so it hurts that big time. I'm just glad they went with this and didn't try to reverse Isabella's death or something. That would've pissed me off. This, at least, you can make sensible given how Sam died as we never saw her breathe her last. I just kind of hope someone else was involved at the start and then somehow Sam ended up with the Dimera's as the Dimera's weren't around back then. It's clear the Dimera's will be involved somehow. I just don't like the idea of them playing a role back then when they had no reason to be. We'll see. I'm actually curious to see how they explain her "death."

I thought you were implying that Deidre was incorrect when she said she's never played a dual role. My point was that if I were Deidre, I'd have said the same thing. I would not consider two episodes in 2004 to be a 'dual role'. But maybe I misunderstood you.

She came back to play Hattie---this sounds completely disrespectful, like they didn't want Andrea so they didn't even ask her. Ugh.

I love seeing the two sisters together. It's so much better than seeing Deidre act opposite a body double.

Did Samantha and Stefano ever even associate with each other? They're going to obviously make Samantha's death just another DiMera trick, but would it even follow the history? Didn't Jake already kill Samantha before the DiMeras even came to Salem?
No, I don't think they ever did, and I don't really think the DiMeras were on the show(if they were, I don't think they were as big of a focus as they were over the next couple of decades).
No, this had nothing to do with the DiMera's. Actually the plot of Sam getting killed was the introduction of the real Roman (Wayne Northrup) and Marlena. Detective Brady came to stay and guard Marlena due to the Salem Slasher storyline. That was the intro to the Brady's back then. Also Josh Taylor was Chris Kositichek at that time, and it was his brother who killed Sam. When viewers thought Marlena had actually been killed back then they called NBC with so many complaints the switchboards went down. LOL. That was a long time ago so correct me if I'm wrong.

I am saying that she's incorrect. Playing Hattie in 2004 still counts as playing two characters at once--she was still Marlena at the time.

Meanwhile, didn't Deidre play Samantha's ghost in 1992 when Marlena was trapped in the pit and near death?

I think Sam's death was a last minute change, too? Originally, that WAS supposed to be Marlena, but fan's were so enraged it ended up being switched to Sam.

That's how it felt back then. At that point Marlena hadn't done much storywise. She had been brought in to be the hospital shrink during another murder mystery when Mickey Horton was a suspect for killing blonde haired women. I don't remember what became of that. But back then there were not fanbases as we know them now. So the idiots in charge got a taste of fan outrage and how much we loved Marlena when they 'killed' her off.

Yes! I have an article on that somewhere - I must find it. It was unprecedented. There was picketing outside the studio and the switchboards were jammed. Hospitals called saying they had to give patients tranquilizers to calm them down, because they thought Marlena was killed.
