Critical Mass: Days' Foursome Gets a Rise

Days of Our Lives brought sexy back t Salem when EJ, Nicole, Lucas and Chloe got lucky in elevators during a freak blackout.

The two couples took different paths to their respective trysts, but both scored big when they let go of their inhibitions. EJ and Nicole's chemistry has been peculating since he became her lawyer. Getting stuck in the elevator provided the perfect opportunity for them to open up to each other. Nicole allowed herself to be vulnerable when she admitted she was unsure about being with EJ because she didn't want to be used again. It was refreshing to see her softer side, and EJ's tenderness was the perfect set-up for the passionate sex that followed.

Meanwhile, Chloe's fear of entrapment put her in damsel-in-distress-mode, giving Lucas a chance to take charge and give her "distraction." They skipped the sweet dialogue: Lucas' complaints about Sami's crush on EJ and Chloe's disappointment over Philip's betrayal provided the coil spring board, as well as a feisty balance to EJ and Nicole's more romantic experience.

Inter cutting between the couples to show intimate details, like Nicole unzipping EJ's pants and Lucas pressing Chloe against the elevator wall, told us all we needed to know. The icing on the elevator shaft was Nicole chewing Sami out for being a hypocrite and blasting EJ for sleazing it up.

Kudos to Days for treating us to the lighter side of elevator sex - and not giving anyone the shaft.

I liked it to, never understood why so many complained. Well I undestand the supercouple-fans since they always complain but many others seemed to dislike it to.

BINGO!

While the elevator sex was a little foolish, I adored the fact that both men moved on. And, Sami found out what both of them were doing. That was the best part.

WTF does that "told us all we needed to know" even mean? Would they have been in the dark about whether it was a sex scene if NB and BD hadn't been choreographed to look like he was taking her prison-style? Or were they expecting legitimate soft-core porn on network television at 1 in the afternoon?

This article is as laughable as the Lucas-Chloe scenes were.

I agree. I love that Days has finally mixed things up and is seeing what works. They already struck gold IMO with EJ/Nicole and Philip/Morgan. I liked the way the elevator sex scenes came out. Lucas/Chloe was a bit forced but still hot and I really like the fact that Sami lost both men. It was a different sort of comeuppance for her.

Well, this person at SOD might have liked the scenes but I think these scenes have led Days to new all-time low ratings for last week. I think it was a turn in the story they didn't want to see and don't want to sit thru.

Apparently Days only averaged 2.3 million viewers last week which probably means they got a 1.7 or 1.8 overall rating which either would be a new low for them.

So if losing fans and, therefore, money is now considered "striking gold" then okay but we all know it's not.

^Actually, the ratings just posted were for the week after the sex scenes. Days technically went up (and I say technically because the week before that they didn't count the ratings because of Wimbledon but they did actually go up as they had a 1.7 the week that wasn't counted and jumped to a 1.9 the week after) so I don't think the sex scenes make much difference. It's never just one thing (and it's definitely not just about one couple or the other) that makes ratings increase or decrease. Hell, all the soaps are falling. It's a bunch of issues, many of which went ignored for years and shows have paid for that mistake dearly in recent years.

I liked the Ejole sex, but the Chloe & Lucas sex was to corny and soft porn like for me.....

For a couple's first time the sex in an elevator was crude and cheap. Even though EJ treated Nicole like a lady.

If they were gonna go there, I wish they were stuck in a room and not going at it on a floor where god knows what's been on it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the scenes EJ and Nicole shared. I thought Ari and James really sold those scenes. Not many actors can take a scene in which the couple is trapped in a dark, hot elevator, have the guy calls out another woman's name just as things are heating up and then turn the scene into something romantic! Who would have thought that that could have turned the tide, taking something that started off casual and a bit raunchy and turning it into something tender and sweet? Well done all around. JMO

I was less enthused with the Chloe and Lucas scenes. I liked the banter they shared and I didn't mind the kissing but I think the sex was a mistake. IMO it would have been enough it they had only "almost" had sex. I would have proffered if Chloe had decided she didn't want to ruin their friendship the way she compromised the one she had with Philip because some people can't do "friends with benefits" and she's just a geek at heart.

I do love that Sami lost both men. IMO one of the major problems with the EJami/Lucas nightmare is that Sami is most loved as the feisty underdog. Watching her play both men against each other while she denied what she was doing and played the powerless victim didn't sit well with me. Sami has stopped being a fighter and has become a reactionary character. Sami really needs time to find her independence.

I know which ratings are which. I am saying the continued loss of viewership is related to that week. It was the type of stuff which could lead viewers to tune out permanently. I think the lower ratings last week are a reflection of the type of character destruction fans don't want to endure.

It wasn't just dumbing down EJ but also making Chloe into a slut. They make everyone so unlikable and stupid it is just irritating to fans to bother to care anymore. Nicole looked as trampy as ever continuing to let EJ bang her even after he called out Samantha's name.

So long as Days writers sacrifice characters for these events they hope will boost ratings, the show will continue to lose viewers. If "critical" praise is more important than the fans, ratings and revenue then so be it but I hope they are all brushing up their resumes if they continue along the path they are on.

I still don't think you can make the case that it's only because of that one factor Days is losing ratings.

No one event, couple, or character can impact the ratings that much. Hell, if you look at the dailies for the sex scenes, they were some of the better daily numbers I believe. The numbers have been going down for over a month now and the scattered Gold preemptions helped that along too. All soaps are going down right now. There are just bigger issues then couples having sex in elevators to worry about. That is probably not even close to scratching the surface as to why the ratings are continuing to tumble. More or less, the show still isn't exciting enough either. We finally got spoilers for August that finally seem to be exciting but the damage may have already been done.

I read about the "dumbing down" of EJ alot, especially when referring to him and Nicole. I don't understand what that means. Can anyone help?

Dumbing down usually means a character's being portrayed as stupid to fit a story. A good example of this is the men under JER's first reign, particularly Austin and John. They got played for fools the way they were easily fooled by Kristen and Sami.

I don't see EJ as being dumbed down at all. His relationship with Nicole, I feel, allows him to be more in character then when he is with Sami. With Sami, he tries too hard to be what she wants. He loses his edge. That isn't EJ. EJ should be both a good and bad guy, where in certain situations he dabbles in scheming. He's very much a gray character IMO and Nicole allows him to be that way and Nicole is allowed to show her WHOLE self to him too. That is what makes their coupling great IMO.

Tim, I like your reference of how JER dumbed down Austin and John - that is what has happened to Sami re: Lucas. She is trying to be what he wants (since Lucas has become Mini-Austin in the last few years)

Someone says being with Nicole dumbs EJ down? If anything, I've read many posts in many places that EJ was pretty well emasculated with Sami, and now with Nicole, he's more back to himself. Unfortunately, there hasn't been too much "now with Nicole" lately.
