Beth Millstein was acting headwriter between Reilly and Hogan and I think she did an amazing job. Her stories were witty and fast moving and romantic. I would love to see her back in the top spot. I'll probably get completely attacked for saying this but I think a co-head writing team of Beth and JER would save the show as long as the producers actually let them write the show. By himself, JER does stupid things but he did seem more in tune with the fans - he just needed someone to toss out his really stupid ideas and inject a little wit and SPEED into his storylines and dialogue and I think Beth would do that.
I agree. The ratings during the interim between Reilly and Sheffer were terrific. Granted, that's not a total measure, but they were great. And, of course, Reilly being gone might have brought a lot of fans back. That, and Sheffer's big name.
I can only speak for myself as a longtime viewer (I started watching around the time that RKK was playing Bo) but I enjoyed the summer of 2006 more than I had enjoyed the show in probably about 5 years at that point. My return to active Days watching duty had nothing to do with JER leaving or Hogan arriving. The show was just better and I saw a huge change in quality the minute Hogan's stories started airing. He was all about women being weak, dependent victims or hookers. I just cringed at his portrayal of female characters. I will never ever forget the dialogue between Belle and Shawn when Belle revealed that she was going to become a nurse instead of a fashion designer and how she needed Shawn's permission to go back to school. First of all, why not a doctor? Secondly, it came off as a bad 50s era scene. I was disgusted. Never mind the ridiculous 12/29 attempt to kill EJami by having Sami become a hooker to save Lucas or Hope becoming a gossiping, meddling mother.

When Ed Scott came on board, I definitely saw improvement but it wasn't until the writer's strike that I really started enjoying Days again (the dialogue was terrible but the storylines were consistent and made sense) and it got better and better until May and then it has been all downhill since then with schizophrenic stories and characters. NuJohn has been one of the few constants on the show and it is no wonder that he is one of my favourite characters right now.

I just hate that I don't even know who to blame or whether to have any hope that things will improve. As far as Ed Scott re-writing scripts, I read the blurb over on the WGA site about what is part of an Executive Producers job and it clearly states that Executive Producers are well within their rights to rewrite scripts. It does also say that they have an obligation to discuss changes with the writers though and give them the opportunity to fix the scripts.
Wonderful post.

I agree with all of it.

The Summer of 2006 was the first time in several years that Days began to feel like Days again.

From October to December it lost that feel again - just something changed.

The first 3 weeks of January were superb with Victor hiding Philip out and the cutody trial. And then everything fell apart.

To me the only thing even at the end of Hogan's run that made it any good at all was Ed Scott's tweaks of the show. The show looked better but the stories still stunk. They were terrible.

It wasn't until the strike happened that Days felt like old days to me. and that lasted until about May when the bottom fell out and the show got soooooooooooooooo boring and uneven that I just quit watching all of it. I haven't watched one second of Days in over a month now.

Hogan was for me a bad headwriter for Days. No matter who's fault it was he never made Days feel like Days to me. Days was like ATWT - it always had interesting strong women characters all the way to when I began watching it. Hogan can't write a woman at all. He couldn't at ATWT and he couldn't at Days.

What I took out of all of what Tom said was that Hogan's writing staff is what saved him. In that long detailed blog entry that Tom did several weeks after his big interview he showed how they took what Hogan wrote and made it good. Hogan didn't do any of the history stuff that was partially used - Tom and the staff put all that in.

Hogan is only as good as the people working with him. And he didn't have a good co-headwriter at all.

It is sad that from 2005 on I can only count a few short times that I have actually enjoyed Days - that is really sad.

The week of Zach's death, the summer of 2006, the 3 weeks in Jan 2007, and the strike months of Jan to the first of April.

That is really sad.

THIS JUST IN: Deidre Hall, Drake Hogestyn, Peter Reckell, and Kristian Alfonso all just walked off the set. They apparently said "screw you" and "sue us" to Ken Corday. It's heartbreaking. They're furious with Ken because he just keeps getting dumber and dumber, and they're sick of it. Ken allegedly told someone close to the actors that he plans to apologize profusely and get them to change their minds.
UPDATE: Other media sources are saying the actors are still working and are still on the show. Well, I told you Ken was going to get them back.

Is this a game anyone can play?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm beginning to believe a certain columnist has egg all over his face.

I said on SATURDAY that Dena was going to come back thanks to Ken; no surprise! "Business as usual," yep, thanks! We already know that. When you hire a scab, u pretty much aren't credible.
wow, just wow! looks like the only good thing to come out of all the drama the last day and a half was this thread...if it was all bullshit and dena has been writing this drivel. she needs to go, its been worse that sucky to watch, its been deadly dull filler... :drunk: lol are we there yet???

The only thing towards the end of Hogan run that was any good was the Chole/Phillip/Belle/Shawn Quard they were building up.

Maybe he is going to give her time to screw up to see if the interference that might have went on affected the writing and what happened.

Who knows. And at this point all I care about is the scandal. I doubt I will ever return to Days anyway so it doesn't really matter who is writing for me. Days was ruined last year for me. Last year totally killed my affection for the show. And I owe that to Hogan.

the scandal has just been to juicy for me as a soap opera historian not to keep up with.

I'm sorry for those of you blaming Nelson. Nelson can only report what is given to him. He could have been like any of the other reporters and not touched this story.

I thank Nelson for having the balls to report stuff.

Steve Frame, do you know much about Al Rabin? I wonder what it was like for him working with these guys. I know he left, then came back for a while. I wonder what he thought of Ken Corday.

I'm undecided on whether this is good or bad. I guess it depends on whose storylines have been airing the past few months. If they were Dena's ideas then Days is in trouble, if they bore no resemblance to Dena's ideas then maybe there is hope now.

Dammit, why can't they all just get along, get their heads out of their asses and write some entertaining shit (that's ok to say here right?) that is somewhere along the lines of something that fans actually want to watch?

Ah yeah now that's what I'm talkin' about!

It's sortof like we need more dirt, meat to this story or cow bell for that matter.

I don't know what is up with the Nelson scoop thing. It is impressive that no one would touch this story. Is it at all possible someone used him to push their own agenda maybe?

I don't think so, because Nelson isn't the only person who heard about this. Numerous sources have expressed that they've heard the same.

All I ever heard from Al Rabin was that he was loved on the set and highly respected by all.

He and H. Wesley Kenney have always had the reputation of being loved by the whole staff. I think there was some jealousy at first when Rabin came in because they loved Kenney so much, but they all got over that.

The last I heard was that Rabin stayed close to all the Cordays even after his retirement.

Maybe Corday legally had to offer her the job back due to the circumstances surrounding her exit?

i so agree its the nature of that business right you take these sources at face value but i guess sometimes the source itself is speculating or nelson was spot on with the scoop and its being covered up or it was done on purpose to created stir, or a million other possiblities i am sure.

Shelley Curtis was another producer that was loved by the cast and crew.

I never thought she would return to daytime she had been out so long, but I saw her in the credits for All My Children the last time I watched it. They have her and Marty Davich part time now too.

Maybe...but knowing Corday, not likely. We all know his track record of asinine decisions.
