Tim, Nelson posted the Nelson Ratings yesterday. It is here in the news section. He even made a comment that no one would read them after Higley Gate. |

I would guess they used them because using the names Peggy McKay, Will Utay, Kevin Dobson and Suzanne Rogers, wouldn't have had the same... impact. |

Oh Gregorzick, you bring back so many memories of soap stories from days gone by that would make this seem so tame in comparison. You talk about interference in the 60's and lack of job security esp. if you worked on an Irna Phillips show where she would fire you on the spot even if you were a star. She fired Helen Wagner. She fired an actress on AW because she didn't like her hair. The sexual harrassment rumors. The fights between Mary Stuart and the Hursley's. Wow. |

I am jumping into the Summer 2006 discussion a little late. Wow - I first started watching again in Summer 2006, and I easily would have tuned out if I had not heard that Sheffer was coming on because I thought it was the most unrealistic, boring stuff. Seriously, you could tune in on Monday and one quad was discussing the most OFFENSIVE infertility/IVF stuff in the MOST unrealistic manner. Then you could not tune in the show until Friday and the SAME lame quad was having the same discussion. OMG, I remember that quad scrabbling out of the middle of one wedding (I can't remember which one because all of the weddings had people having these totally unrealistic side conversations DURING the wedding) so Belle and Mimi could have these embryos implanted at the same time. Oh, and in the SAME ROOM! NO ONE can claim that any medical thing done since then was so damn unrealistic. Hello - stuff like that takes tons of monitoring, injections, etc. It was so so contrived. I won't even get into the other quad with Sami, Lucas, Carrie and and Austin. The dialogue was so stilted. The only thing that ever happened was that Sami was going to have these "reveals" about Carrie's real pregnancy situation like once or twice a day but then it was these stupid fake outs instead. It was so demeaning to the viewer, IMO. And, don't worry, if Sami was not on one day, you KNEW that Mimi would have her share of ridiculous fake outs or dreams of HER secret pregnancy reveal. Oh, and characters would talk to themselves in such a cartoonish manner. Remember how characters NEVER interacted outside their specific quad? Hope was completely an unrecognizable, bitter character and Bo was this wimp. MBE's only line for months was "Do you remember anything?" Mileage obviously varies but I thought even the actors seemed very bored and uninspired by their material. Edited by Ives, Jul 29 2008, 10:50 PM.

Lord. Finally got caught up to speed after I came home from work. Not exactly an easy task (but much easier than it would've been yesterday lol). In regards to budget as it applies to soaps, let me say this... Sets could be made of cardboard and construction paper and filled in with crayola markers and as long as the acting is solid and believable and the storylines thought out and compelling, I am so there. I'm currently watching Edge of Night on aol right now and I'm so incredibly hooked you can't imagine. The sets are marginal at best (some are down right hideous). Hell, half of them *look* like sets, but my god... Every single day is some sort of cliffhanger. Every character seems to be involved (in some way or another) in each other's storyline (even characters who don't seem to be, *will* be before all is said and done) and every single scene is there for a reason. Nothing is filler. And I can't stop watching. It was 2:30 in the morning the other night and I'd just done a good 3 hours marathon of Edge and said "just one more episode" and, damn it, Molly Sherwood pulled Draper & April's wedding picture out of her purse and handed it to Emily and said "He's her husband!" and it faded to black. Damn it! I got drug into watching for another hour just to find out what was going to happen (and, damn it, I already *know* what's going to happen, but I still had to see and find out). Why can't soaps be written like that again? I guess what I'm trying to say is that if the writing is there. If the acting and characters are there. I can overlook flimsy sets and wardrobe that comes from Target. The best looking, most lavishly produced show in the world isn't going to get me to watch if it's a bunch of stick figures who can't act, saying the same thing over and over, doing idiotic things that make no sense, with stories that come across like they were written by a 10 year old. |

Yeah, Irna did fire Helen Wagner from ATWT and everybody at P&G had to "eat crow" as one soap historian once wrote for about a month when they were forced to rehire La Wagner. It will be interesting to see who is still employed after all is said and done on this latest scandal at DAYS. If I remember correctly, Irna fired Fran Sharon as Susan Matthews #1 for changing her hair on ANOTHER WORLD. If memopry serves me, P&G solved the problem by having Miss Sharon return to her previous soap role as Cookie Pollock Thomas on THE EDGE OF NIGHT and I'm not so sure that TPTB at EON really wanted her back at the time!!! |

I thought it was Sarah Cunningham (the original Liz Matthews) who got fired from AW for cutting her hair. |

I have been saying the same thing over and over Matt. EON never had great sets but they always had a good following. EON never had the elaborate production values that other shows did. And neither did many of them. Even at times the dialogue wasn't that great, but the stories were there and they were about characters that the viewers cared about. The only thing that matters to me about sets at all is if the character being there makes sense. If it doesn't make sense for them to be there or I am left thinking why are all these people here - that makes a difference. Same with dress, if I am left wondering how a person could afford to wear what they are wearing then that makes a difference for me. I want character dressing appropriately. |

Fran Sharon got fired for cutting her hair like Greg said. Sarah Cunningham got fired after 1 day because Irna didn't like her hair - didn't like it at all. I think it was John Beal that she just didn't like the way he looked even though she saw how he looked when she hired him. |

Eileen Fulton even told sometime around the 50th that Irna tried to get rid of her. Irna and Rosemary Prinz were rumored not to get a long either and Irna didn't mind it when Prinz left the show. |

I know some will accuse us of taking things off topic with that last stuff, but to make it on subject for those that get mad about that in this thread. People say that there is interference now and that is why writers can't write. That has nothing to do with it. There has always been interference and there have always been producers and writers who clashed and ruled their soaps with a tight fist. Soaps prospered under them. People knew their place and they came to work and did their job and did it to the best of their ability. They had the talent to do it. Today they don't. That is the reason I keep coming back to people using the interference excuse as to why these writers can't write. Of course even though JER was interfered with he isn't given any slack, but Hogan is. But that is another story. Both fall into the same category. They were too petty and lacked the talent to write anything but what they wanted to write. My guess is that with them and with Higley and others it is not that they really don't have the talent - they are just like the child playing baseball and if it is not done his way by his friends then he is going to take his ball and go home. JER, Higley and Hogan (if they truly were interfered with) were like that child - well if I can't write what I want this is what you are going to get out of me that that is all. I'll hold back my talent and go home. |

For Matt and Steve Irna couldn't get rid of Fulton after the miscasting of Pamela King as Lisa Hughes #2 on ATWT. Once PGP got Fulton back on the show, it was a done deal. Irna was always trying to get rid of people who she felt didn't go along with her vision of her soaps. I know some old soap day players in The Cincy Soap Hood who felt that Fran Sharon got off easy after cutting her hair before AW's debut. Miss Sharon damm well knew the look that Irna wanted for the charcter of Susan!!! The fact that P&G let Miss Sharon go back to her old job on EDGE was pretty fuckin lucky for her. It was only sarcasm. Sorry for the confusion. It looks like anybody can make up something and then take it back, but I'm not saying that's what Nelson is doing. I think he's trying to break some news that DAYS, as usual, does not want to confirm. So he looks bad. Whenever he is able to come out with more, he knows he's going to have to be careful because of all the WGA mess. It makes this situation very sticky. |
