There's a big difference between what fans say and what they really mean (whether they know they mean it or not).
There is also a difference between viewers being mad and still watching and viewers being so mad that they tune out for long periods of time. DAYS has spent the last 4 years making promises to their viewers and not keeping them. They've done this so many times that it's impossible to trust what any of TPTB have to say and with the poor product they continue to provide, it's difficult to have faith in their ability to deliver anything viewers actually want to see.

Oh, I think TPTB should listen to fans. After all this is a show, its entertainment....its not a work of art by one for one...its something that is supposed to hold your interest and if the show can not do that then it is a failure.... it dies...If they want to keep a show on the air they have to keep ppl watching, and therefore they must listen to the audience.

I think TPTB should take what fans want into account somehwhat, but I want consistent storytelling with a clear direction, and I think that TPTB trying to cater to several fanbases is part of what stops that from happening.

Haha yeah, sorry, this is not going to boil down to a couple debate. It needs to stay on topic. :)

Which fans are they supposed to listen to? The ones that want Lumi or the ones that want EJami or the ones that want neither? Do they go by volumne of mail, campaigns, etc? That is my problem with listening to the fans, who do you listen to?

See, but which fans do they listen to? Are they just supposed to listen to the ones that send them the most postcards, candy, and whatever other shit a fanbase uses to "campaign"? Then there's the fact that that disregards the scads and scads of fans who don't post on boards and write fanmail, or who may be part of a fanbase that doesn't use excessive and extraordinary tactics to pimp their couple to TPTB, but they still have wants too.

OK, after seeing Tuesday's show (finally) I wonder if the 'leak' (whoever it was), if this is true, said it was the 'diva' we all (by now) have heard it is, just to cover up THE REAL diva: Deidre Hall. Come on, what was with Marlena kicking butt and taking names for almost no reason? First, the one that REALLY sent up a red flag: chewing out Trent just because he skipped a girl in the goddamn coffee line. Some of her scenes with EJ were quite melodramatic and over-the-top too. I don't know; I just thought some things were off about that episode. As if they clearly were written to make the character more 'strong' these days, and a vibrant player.
Ok, seriously is Alison Sweeney the diva-who-must-not-be-named? I love how nobody will say her name but if they think it's Deidre Hall or someone else, the name is typed out
I know, what's up with that? I'm guilty too of it. We can't say the diva's name (or act like we can't). But we say the others!

I think they should go by mail volume and who the majority wants....majority rules...If You want the bigger ratings then you want the bigger group of fans happy.

I guess my problem with this is that mail volume does not reflect what the majority of fans want, because the majority of fans don't write in. I know I sure dont!

So if a fanbase of 12 is very industrious and sends in alot of mail, more so than a fanbase of 112, then that is who the show should listen to?

A fan base of 12?...Umm I am sure they would be very easy to spot. I doubt TPTB are that dumb...even if they did hire Higley.

But how would they know it was only 12 people if they were getting hundreds of letters all using different names

Post marks are very very telling. They have ppl whose job is to handle mail volume. They know.

i would think it is almost like a statistical thing when they assess fan mail..when pollmakers take polls it is extrapolated..also they probably visit message boards to assess what is going on in the pulse..not everyone is online, but the most passionate and knowledgeable ones are. and ken corday was quoted in a book about the history of days (sorry i read it, but do not have it anymore) that they do listen to fans..and fans can change story line..i know people point to the marlena murder (i never believed that one but it got people excited)..but just last year, it was apparent in dialogue that the rinr campaign shook days up..but then the ejami campaigns trumped rinr..in spades..so ej was redeemed, and we got the sight of a 'rape victim' making love, in a scenario never attempted on days...and it sparked! i do agree that fan outcry can result in dull stories as well..but when tptb can recognize good story, what will make conflict and angst..and love and passion..fans confirming that are a great asset to the show!

I think that's probably true. I don't think volume of mail should be an accurate gauge--for one thing, just like people can have multiple screen names, the same four or five people could be sending in the same, "I luv EJami/Chan/whatever, please put more of this sizzling hot couple on my screen!" letters. But that doesn't mean the actual majority of viewers is pining for those couples.

ETA: I really doubt the mailroom would analyze postmarks, but even so savvy enough fans know that mailing services can mail letters from other places so it would appear letters are coming from a variety of sources. Some people really do get that obsessed, I'm sure. Just look at Terry.

Exactly! All it takes is a few in one fanbase who are willing and most succesful in spamming the blogs, spamming internet polls, buy the most gifts, and writing letters until their hands fall off, and that makes it seem like a vast amount of viewers want a certain couple, when in fact it could be the complete opposite. For example, should they really subject us to more and more ejami and dansea just because those fanbases flood the boards and the mail room? IMO, hell no. There are other fanbases that are still huge and more huge, but they are just not as tedious in "campaigning".
