I guess my problem with this is that mail volume does not reflect what the majority of fans want, because the majority of fans don't write in. I know I sure dont!
I think that's probably true. I don't think volume of mail should be an accurate gauge--for one thing, just like people can have multiple screen names, the same four or five people could be sending in the same, "I luv EJami/Chan/whatever, please put more of this sizzling hot couple on my screen!" letters. But that doesn't mean the actual majority of viewers is pining for those couples.

ETA: I really doubt the mailroom would analyze postmarks, but even so savvy enough fans know that mailing services can mail letters from other places so it would appear letters are coming from a variety of sources. Some people really do get that obsessed, I'm sure. Just look at Terry.
Good point...especially about Terry, he's a great example.

I think the actress that plays Nicole is the secret actress. She is in every freaking scene and storyline.
God she is annoying. And when is Nelson going to say something. Anything? Do you think at some point he has to address the breaking story that he put out there? One way or the other I want to know what happened. If this is how Higley saved her ass from the chopping block and got away with it, I will be pissed.

Fans who write the studio on a weekly basis or spend 12 hours a day on message boards are- by definition- not representative of the average viewer. It's very risky for any show to "extrapolate" based on that kind of feedback.

fans who spend a few hours a day online are probably fans who tivo the show, or dvr it..and check in on boards often while they are supposedly working..which to me would make them very representative of the average fan..and the fact is internet access did not exist back in 'the day'..but now is just as representative as people who only use cell phones rather than land lines should say a lot. and fans who are members of boards are more likely to write, email, or in general express an opinion. it is like political parties want to reach the likely voter ...i would think the powers that be would want to reach the likely watcher..

That's not the only feedback they listen to. Ratings, focus groups, phone calls, letters, emails, industry buzz, all come in to play when extrapolating for feedback.

He still references the scoop in his latest article so he must still be standing behind it - he just doesn't have anymore information.

I still think whatever he was told, was exaggerated by a highly biased source who didn't have all the facts. But this is Days and the drama has been better behind the scenes than in front of it for a long time now.

I find it funny that fans in here are saying for them to stop reading message boards, to shut down mail rooms, and stop listening to the fans so much.

And then the ATWT fans turn around and are ready to lynch Chris Goutman because he said he doesn't listen to the fans.

Go figure. No wonder these execs don't know whether to scratch their watch or rewind their butt.
See, it's not so much the fans they shouldn't listen to, but the rabid *fanbase*. There's a difference between people intelligently critiquing a show and some fans of Combinedcharactername screaming bloody murder over something. I imagine they listen to the latter far more.

This listening to the fans thing is what is the biggest thing wrong with soaps now.

Yes they do need to listen to fans to see what is working and what is not.

But in the end they need to have the brains enough to know they need to decided what is best for the show in the long run. They are now making way too many decisions by letting the fans hold the show hostage and changing things for them when they are not good for the show.

Irna Phillips listened to her fans and so did Irving Vendig and others, but they did not let them control the show.

When Irna killed off Kathy on GL in 1958, that was the first big fan outcry - millions of letters and phone calls stormed the studio in protest to bring her back or undo it somehow. Today a producer would change that but Irna and Lucy Ferri didn't. They addressed the situation that death happens in life and that it happens there too.

The same things happened when Sara Karr was killed on EON in the early 60's, and then the biggest outcry ever was when Jeff Baker was killed in a car crash on ATWT in 1962. That was termed by the newspapers - one of the first times that soap news was picked up by the mainstream press - they called it the car crash heard around the world or something to that affect.

Today the outcry would have caused those deaths to be undone - story rewritten and the like. But it didn't back then. They stood firm with the decision.

As Matt said many times fans think they know what they want and what is best for the show, but many fans have their own agenda at heart and not what is best for the show overall.

I don't mind shows bringing someone back from the dead, but, first, leave their "death" open where it can be explained later on why the person is suddenly alive. Days did this with Roman, Hope, Marlena, Steve, Stefano - their returns from the dead while slightly unbelievable could still be accepted.

First Tony (supposedly now really Andre) returning when he committed suicide because he was terminally ill and then Melaswen Island and the Serial Killer storyline was an abomination because the way most of those people died, there should have been no doubt they were dead. But yet they show up alive. Zach's death brought some reality back to the show but then the writers took that right back with the way they had John's "death" play out on screen and then they brought him back too.

People want to know what they are seeing on screen matters and is real in the context of the show. Days has lost all credibility so it is no surprise how low their ratings are. They also haven't built anything new and solid over the last 10 years. If the show is to be saved, they might have to to what they did in the 80s which is clean house a bit, introduce a new family and front burner a bunch of fresh new faces leaving only a couple remnants from the last regime. But, to have a chance of success, that also requires writing likable characters you can root for - something Days has not been able to accomplish yet this decade.

I think they should go by mail volume and who the majority wants....majority rules...If You want the bigger ratings then you want the bigger group of fans happy.
The majority of viewers are NOT us soapfans on the internet, we are the minority!

No she's not. You're just saying that because you're an Ejami fan and you feel threatened by her.

To be perfectly honest, I hope this whole thing just kind of dies. I hope and pray that the pet actress story was overexaggerated. I hope Nelson is not in hot water for publishing any of it. I hope the WGA shakes a warning finger and nothing else. I hope Ed Scott is here to stay.

And Days goes on just fine.

That's silly. Why would anyone, Ejami fan or otherwise, feel threatened by an actress they don't know? People spend way too much time overthinking this stuff.
